The 'metal gearboxes' that some higher end HL / Torro tanks come with, are they any good, compared to the standard plastic gears? What can I expect from them?

Hey Lert... from what I've read...most will say they are junk... me... I like them..especially the new gens...they are very smooth ...I would also venture to say the HLs are better cast now than the Taigen's of the same grade ...the operation is as good as the steel gears now...and have very little of that old gear rumble

Yes, the 'mystery' tank I'm getting is a newer gen Torro one.

I replaced mine with the black hardened steel gearboxes in 4.1 ratio anything less is just that, less. But again my tanks weigh more then 20 pounds and I run them like they were real tanks. I like bullet proof, the heavier duty the better! I do not want to take my tanks to the park and have a gear box go out on me because I decide to run it thru a stream or gravel or thru foot tall grass. This is also why I run the metal lower hulls and metal tracks and road wheels and adjustable idler wheels.

I have to be straight with you Lert... I'm not sure about the quality of the Torros...they might still use the old casted Taigen boxes...those I would say are sketchy...the casting is course ....they're ok...but they grumble alot..and are prone to shredding.... but with that said... I wish you luck...that Torro did adapt and are putting in better cast gears

So the only problem might be running noise? That's something that proper lubrication and some noise dampening inside the hull can help mitigate, not something I'm really too worried about. It's sturdiness I'm looking for, really.

Then you want the same ones I run. Use a little valve grinding compound in the gearboxes to help break the gears in and quiet them down. Once they do just wash them out with something like brake clean and you're good to go.

They should be sturdy enough....but if you read some of what others post...the course cast ones are the ones more likely to shed a tooth or so...with that said though...just run them...they are plenty strong...changing to steel right off the bat is a 50 to 80 dollar mod...and I know you want to conserve your resources for other builds ...shoot a bit of furniture polish like Pledge in them let it set for a minute...dab off the residual with a paper towel and just run the heck out of them
