Please can anyone advise if this is best sprayed direct from the can, as I have read in one book that it is best used with an air brush. If so, how do you get the primer out of the can ?
How and what product would you reccomend for priming my Tamiya KT.
Also is it best to prime once built or prime and paint each part prior to assembly.

There is a Tamiya primer ( Acrylic ) that is used with an air brush and also, a Tamiya rattlecan primer ( the type I prefer ) that is enamel based. Pick which type you want and go for it. Excellent products all around.

if you are referring to a rattle can ? I presume you are, stating best sprayed direct from can ... you cant get it out of the can, the can is pressurised ,unless you fancy being covered in it ? not a good idea messing with pressurised cans old chap ....wot wot .....

Tip:

Use Tamiya Metal Primer on all the assembled metal hull and suspension parts and metal barrel if your using one. Do not build up the paint to thick on the metal barrel near the mantlet or it will hurt the recoil feature.

I'd construct the turret but leave the gun out and the turret left off to prime, the wheels, sprockets and idlers and prime and paint those individually. Construct the hull as guided and prime before adding the electrics and build the upper hull and prime. Once done the two hull hhalves are easy to paint together, as is the fully assembled turret. I'd paint the running gear while it's off the tank and easily to handle. That's how I did mine at any rate

There is a way to use rattle can paint, without spraying from the can. I have seen some modellers use it on the web.

You need to get something about the size of the rattle can lid, and put some cling film/kitchen wrap over it. Make a hole small enough for the nozzle to go through, and spray into the lid.

The paint will be liquid, and contain solvent, so you have to use it quickly.

That said, I use cheap auto primer (Halfords in the UK) or Rustoleum Primer (which is excellent stuff) and costs about the same. Primer is primer at the end of the day, and specialist modelling variants tend to be sold at a premium. Lots of people use auto primer, and auto fillers for that reason.

Primer isn't all the same though. Using an acidic metal etching primer on plastic would be a bad idea.

I'd go with Tamiya Fine Grey Primer (not the fine metal primer linked in an earlier post), straight from the can. It will work perfectly on your model.

I have used a Krylon 'Ruddy Brown" primer direct from the can - 98% match to German primer..

Simoniz make an acrylic red primer in a 500ml rattle can for £5, it is exactly the right colour of German armour undercoat, I buy mine from a local car spares shop (A1 MOTOR STORE)I just change the spray head for one from a TAMIYA rattle can, One tank per can whereas the HUMBROL or TAMIYAs need at least two and cost a fortune in comparison, As mentioned elsewhere Halfords do a 500ml grey primer again just change the nozzle. shaun
