hi there, anyone know what ratio gearbox is standard in the heng long leopard 2. it appears to be a cheap zinc type metal, was looking at perhaps swapping it out for a better one but just wanted to know the ratio of the standard one. my tank will probably not do a great deal of mileage , but be more of a show piece in the end.

Greetings Husky Dog... usually the HL gearboxes are 2:1 in ratio...some of the newer models have 3:1....and there is really nothing wrong with the zinc gearboxes... knock on wood ...none of mine have failed yet...The most important thing is to break them in properly...by lubing them with pure silicon grease... read the labels...if it's a petroleum based lubricant ... the zinc gears will deteriorate ... the metal is porous .. the petroleum will seep into the metal...causing it to break down in time..silicon is more friendly
It's the same as brass gears
Good Luck huskydog

Hi If you want to upgrade go for the Steel gearboxes and speed 400 motors on a standard Heng Long board. If you upgrade the electrics you can fit 480 motors . These gears and motors should give you a good turn of speed.

Im pretty sure they are 2:1 as the leopard is a bit of a speed mechant compared to the older WW1 and WW2 models
Being a modern tank it should be faster therefore using less gear reduction.
As for ZINC gears depends on who built them. Some last however i destroyed 2 sets
I would recommend the black steel versions from Taigen.
Also this tank uses same gears as the walker bulldog, the Pershing and also the King tiger to name but a few hope this helps

thanks for the speedy reply folks. at what points are the gearbox ratios measured from 3:1 =3turns motor to one turn output shaft? etc.

well still cant get a 3 to 1 ratio on my gearbox. turned the gear that the motor drives around 8 times and tank drive sprocket turns one time which would make 8 to 1. what gear to what gear is the ratio worked out from?

Hi Huskydog
Look in the download section about half way down there is a gearbox calculator in excel format that will help you.
3:1 is a general term for 3 times lower ratio than the standard version, in reality it's about 2.5:1
