what are these things on the side of the tank destroyer that look like thin tracks and what are they used for. http://www.track48.com/userfiles/M10_30.jpg

i'm guessing that they're stowage racks !

I had that same question when I was trying to figure out what the things in the racks on the sides of an M5 Stuart turret were. Like Doc Larsson said, they are storage rack. They are for grousers, which were added to the track runs for extra grip. Here is a thread that talks about how they were installed, and shows a couple of pictures of them.
