Elefant rebuild

Post by tomhugill »

Yesterday I took delivery of Iains elefant. I'd forgotten the trails of my elefant when I built it so I had a bit of a rude awakening. The original plan was install a Clark and put it up on eBay, but I've decided to rebuilt the suspension in line with the mods Nigel et al have done. I don't think she's ever been run (lack of grub screw on the output shafts would imply this anyway!) So we shall see how the elevation, traverse and recoil work.

This evening I started work doing the group build suspension mods. With a little addition of my own. I've added a piece of styrene under the end of the spring that goes on the bogie. This provides a good but more tension than just ending the spring. Pictures of this to follow.
Hats of to Nigel, Paul and tankman; the suspension mods totally transform the running of the tank. Track are no longer sticking and she runs much more smoothly. Annoyingly Iain stuck the hub caps on a bit too well (I couldn't get them off for love nor money). So I used the set off my other elefant for the mods.

Here's a video on the suspension in action:

Tried plugging in the traverse and elevation. Elevation is ok but could use some tweaks, traverse only works in one direction. I'm guessing a micro switch playing up as I swapped the plugs with the elevation and still the same issue.

That is one sweet Elephant, Tom. I really dig the paint/ camo scheme. Are the motors driving the front or rear sprockets? Are these Hooben kits set up for elevation on the gun? Or do you have to make the mods yourself?

Great job. One monster of a machine.

Sure it's not the prettiest tank around... prone to drive problems and fire hazard... but you're just the expert that can solve all of these issues

You say veteran builder, my mrs says hoarder!! It is very useful Iight say.

A quick video to show the fruits of my labours:

Running on slightly damp grass but not a sign of tracks coming off, handles well. Overall very impressed!
