to smoke or not to smoke.....

hi all
I am going to mod the smoke unit that has never worked on my Tiger 1.....
My idea is to use a small electric motor with a small propellor and attach it to where the piston used to sit on the smoke unit but-
the mutli function board is only showing .2 volts- and there is not enough power getting to the motor in the smoke unit- nor heat the filament.
(I have used a heater element from an old toaster which is quite thicker than the heng long original)
directly connecting the 7.2 volt standard battery it all worked well (with the correct resistor fitted)
So as the multi function unit appears buggered, Im thinking of by-passing it and connecting to the main battery and existing smoke on/off switch.
Any one done this sort of thing and is it likely to affect the battery performance/charge?
Any input would be appreciated!
many thanks!
