Hi everyone,i have the early model Tiger 1 it has no sound or smoke features and i have just started upgrading metal parts to it so far i have only bought the cheap stuff like smoke launchers, shackles and loaders hatch.
My next purchase will be the metal tracks and they are going to cost me $100 with freight..so i looked up the pro version Tiger 1 with metal tracks, smoke and sound for the total price of $228.00.
Now i'm not sure if i want to spend $100 on the metal track upgrade or spend another $128 dollars and get the pro version..
What would you do.... Regards Diesel

Good Morning,
I have one of the original HL Tiger 1's and briefly considered doing a complete upgrade like you are. In the end, counting the costs and time, I decided to leave it stock (sentimental reasoning was also a factor) and get one of the vastly improved and upgraded Tiger 1's from Taigen. I reasoned that this way I get one of the newest and best Tigers out there and keep my original Heng Long to show folks just how far that the Hobby had come. If the upgrade bug strikes (and it always does) I have a slightly newer Tiger 1 in Desert Yellow that would benefit from some of the new stuff available out there.
Whatever you decide to do, have fun with it. ;o)
regards,

Diesel,
I would recommend the Taigen Tiger 1 either early or late. I have both and they have metal chassis, tracks, all road wheels, 2.4 radio system, smoke/sound/ and you can get them either in BB or IR. Mideatoys on Ebay in California has them with free shipping. Cost about $330. They are very nice tanks and have just about every upgrade there is. Good luck.

My first tank was a Heng Long Tiger 1 I paid £45 for it then spent another £200 doing it up with metal upgrades I sold a second hand Tiger last week and only got £137 for it and it had all the metal upgrades including the hull suspension etc if you look in ebay they come up all the time for about that price I would go down that road.

Hi Diesel.........
I can only echo the sentiments expressed to far . We all I think start off with a basic model of some sort , probably a purchase
of about £100 ish I guess . Then as the bug bite's ... Hmmm so does the cost , a full on build with mod's and upgrades for most
would add another £200 easily . I think it is all down to you as a person , I like the fact that even though I have spent way too
much ( Cant express it any other way ! ) you end up with something unique and the reward that you made it that way .
I could opt without the smoker but the sound option I think is essential , so upgrading your Tiger (I think) would involve sourcing
out new electronics which will add some what to the cost of a build . If you go for a full on build be prepared
there will be a lot of tears and tantrum's along the way , probably why we all appreciate the work members show on this forum ,
sometimes I look at the new Taigen gear and wonder if I could have just bought one to save the hassle , common sense would
suggest we just buy the thing correct , but when my Tiger is finished I know I will sit back and enjoy what I have created .
I would probably go for Tankmad's suggestions and find an ebay/forum purchase ( Try advertising in the "wants" section, its free ! )
You may end up with a Tiger that has most of the mod's done to it already and someone else has done all the hard work .. good Luck .

DIESEL, What we have here is the basis of why we are here on this forum, of course you could buy a Taigen or Torro full option, or you could buy a smoke and sound Heng Long Tiger 1. My latest purchase is a Torro full option Tiger 1, it is great but it has shortcomings and so I am now in the middle of stripping it down to get it right including the £3oo+ basic cost this is going to be very expensive, Question? will it when I have finished be £300 better than a smoke and sound Heng Long Tiger 1, of course not, but it will be unique to me, but every Tank we upgrade whatever the cost is just that, no two upgraded Tanks are the same so forget about the cost

and think what it is you are looking for in a Tank, remember we will offer all the help you ask for BUT this is your Tank. Good luck. shaun

If I tell you that my Tiger 1 was the first tank I bought, about 5-6 years ago, and it cost £45, you might not be surprised. However, there is no longer a single component on the tank that was on the original.
I simply kept spending money on it to make it as good as I wanted it. Back then there were no Taigens with all the fancy bits on, so I had to buy them and rebuild it all as I went along.
It is now a quality piece of kit, though due to my preference for a battle weary Tiger you wouldn't think so to look at it. I dread to think what it has cost me, but probably as much as a basic Tamiya. The difference being that this one is a mid-late version and detailed to match (though not perfect).
I did buy metal tracks for it at one point, but scrapped them in favour of Tamiya plastic ones. The Tamiya ones still break, but they place less stress on the tank on grass.
It is way cheaper nowadays to buy something like a Taigen and use that as a base.

I bought a pre smoke and sound Tiger 1 around 2004, paid about £45 as well. Tried a few different thing but eventually I hacked the crap out of it and turned it into a Sturmtiger. I sold it recently but you can follow my build thread below:

hmmmm, good question.
I would throw my wallet at it, slave away for hours
then buy the taigen because I was too worried about damaging it!
plus my painting skills are crap so the taigen is a good investment.
on second thoughts, you should get the taigen to play with & then spend a fortune rebuilding the tiger

Hi everyone, thank you for your sensible suggestions! and i agree with you. Went on the net and googled taigen rc tiger1 tank read through all the 14 pages that came up looked at lots of u tube video on them, read up on how they were made and decided that was for me.
Unfortunately the cheapest one was in the U.K. and it was going to cost me $382 dollars which i didn't mind because it's a great tank but the shipping was another $232 dollars total amount being $614 dollars which I'm afraid is a bit to much for me .Hmmm might just put of buying another one until i come across a Taigon which i can afford.
Cheers Diesel
