Battle units.

Hi Guys,

my next project is fitting a battle unit cos I got to meet some of you buggers soon.......

What units are you fitting?

HL units only have a possible 4 crystals so I guess that you are using a better transmitter and rcvr plus a battle unit so that more than 4 of you can play at one time.........so what is the prefered installation please?

I am using El-mod so I presume I can fit any of the units out there....not Tamiya obviously...

I am in Essex, so what are you using in Essex or the South please?

I have three tanks so I can fit each tanks differently if necessary.......

Cheers chaps.............Mike.

Hi Mike

I think you should be able to fit the EGS from Tankzone (they finally shipped mine yesterday, but only to my parents place in England so I won't be seeing that for a while).
El-Mod have their own unit called the 'CSI' - but ask The Blitz for more information, as I don't know if it works with the version that talks to the HL transmitter and receiver boards...?

Tamiya won't work for sure as the TBU is just a receiver, Davids systems (DBC & DBC2HL) only work with the Heng Long motor control boards and the new HL system doesn't talk to the others. Tankhobby's system requires a comercial radio and receiver in order to trigger the firing circuit - or at least I think thats the case? I've emailed him to confirm  - it may be possible to wire a relay in place of the HL airsoft motor and use that to trigger the firing command? Even if this does work, the system is not without its acceptability issues tho (no slowing the tank down when it gets hit).

My long and tedious ramble on the various options, and their limitations, can be found here:
http://www.rctankwarfare.com/Forums/ind ... 919.0.html

Hopefully you can find something that suits you,
Mart

Hi Mart, thanks for the info......
Having never been to, or seen a tank battle....other than on U tube.... how many tanks take part?
If I stick with HL gear, there are only 4 crystals for the rc gear arn't there, so there would only be 4 tanks envolved. And HL only works with HL wheras some other battle systems work with other makes........thats why I asked what people are using so that I can join in.

I would be woried that I built my tank and found that I had the only one on that system.......embarassing or what...

Guess I got lots of reading to do on your link

Many thanks and hav e a great weekend.

when you come to a battle the venue is arranged as best as possible to suit all
some guys are using the spectrum 2.4ghz sets with more frequencies and less freq crossovers

for the rest of us at the moment we swap xtals and make sure we have a fair go at it this is normally sorted on the day and battles arranged as per the limitations so you can battle whatever your requirements

the battle system has to be compatible for obvious reasons ;)

even if you turned up without a battle system you could still drive around and have fun this is the nature of the event even a H/long straight out the box is ok  ;)  so if anyone wants to come along and have a look please feel welcome and bring what you have its great just to have a group of guys there all talking tanks ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

(obviously if you go down the spectrum route you can play all day batteries allowing)

Hope this helps some ;) ;)

Kind regards Rob

Hi guys there are 3 more channels for heng long but getting hold of them is hard work I think Andy is trying to get hold of them but not having to much luck I think they will sell like hot cakes when he does manage to get them .
As expat says the other alternatives are Darkiths new units which allow any after market radios to be used and then there is El-mod .The cheapest option is Darkiths units but the cost does add up new radio&receiver the cost of the kit from Darkith if you build it yourself or from Blitz if you want it ready assembled .With El-mod you also have the cost of radio equpement to add on .

Here's my view, I have an Elmod Tiger that has the Elmod Battle system and an HL Bulldog that has the Darkith unit (keeping the HL boards).

For pure battling I would go with standard HL tank, and a Darkith unit. The Darkith requires soldering together, but its not exceptionally complex. His instructions are excellent, and everything is labelled. What you end up with is an HL tank with mass inertia accelaration and braking, a Tamiya compatible battle system, and the ability to change between light, medium and heavy tank settings. It also allows muzzle flash and additional sounds.

The Darkith kit cannot be fitted to an Elmod. The Elmod board controls the tank weight, inertia etc. They are not compatible in that respect. The Elmod unit comes pre-assembled and apart from finding a way of fitting it, it is a plug and play system.

Both systems are totally compatible with, and an improvement on, the Tamiya system. By comparison the Tamiya is a highly detailed, easy to use, radio controlled toy tank. They do not operate at scale speeds, their response to battle hits isn't impressive and this gives them a distinct advantage in battling.

I have just come in from a freezing garden, my Tiger v a Tamiya Jagdpanther. Its like trying to battle against a demented clockwork mouse! The Tamiya tracks actually wheelspin on gravel, the mushroom has blindspots, and hitting it has no effect on anything other than speed.

The Elmod stops dead for 2 seconds when hit, and the Darkith stops too.

If you have an Elmod then get the Elmod CSI, it works, and has loads of configuration settings!

A couple of pics attached...I have hidden all of the sensors and all of the led's on both of mine.

Cheers

Wow, thanks for the info it gives me a good guide.

my Tiger has El-mod and the Creeping death turret, so I need to use the RX14 board, so I will just use it for fun.
Sadly  this means that I will have to buy another Tiger for battling......oh bother!

I take it from all your replies that Tamiya, El-mod and Darkieth's systems are all compatible and that HL system is purely for HL to HL combat.

Do you all keep the working BB cannon and make provision for the IR light tube elsewhere?

Heres looking forward to a battle soon............Mike

Mike,

See my how-to on flipping the mantlet on the HL Tiger:
http://www.rctankwarfare.com/Forums/ind ... 932.0.html
I pulled out the red warning LED and replaced it with an emitter mounting tube (leave the LED attached the wiring if you want the airsoft to work!).
PM the Blitz about the CSI, that may plug in to what you have already.

Just curious, do you have the full Elmod, or the RX18 board wiith an Elmod hooked up to it?

Re the emitter, as mentioned pull out the HL LED from the mantle, the Elmod 5mm LED pops straight in. I also added a piece of 10mm tube externally on the mantle to keep the IR beam focused on the target.

If you fit a Darkith unit they come with a 3mm led and that is a loose fit in the mantle, its also a bit weak. You can do a direct swap, no need for resistors or anything with this high intensity led from Maplins. They are 79p and as they are 5mm they will also plug straight into the mantle.

I may even try swapping the Elmod one with a Maplins jobbie to see if I get better range.

HI

The Tiger that I am building is about to get E-mod TLS, Booster, Blaster and the Afterburner cos I recon it will weigh a ton. I am using the RX14 cos I have a Creeping death turret which , apparently does not work with the RX18. This tank is my electronics education and money pit, cat and squirrel scarer as well.

So far I  also have a PZ3 and a PZ4, plus hopefully a Sherman soon..... also a bloomin great pile of reduntant parts as I have completely upgraded the Tiger and PZ3.

When el-mod brought out their new cards, I bought two sets of the above electronics.... so I have the makings of another full electronics upgrade.

If I put the second set into another tank and use el-mod battle system plus upgraded RC gear, I presume it will go in a PZ3 size tank.........hopefully.

If not I will read up on what I can hang onto the HL cards and do battle with you all that way.

This Tiger tank was suposed to be a bit if fun with my grandson....instead it has taken over the shed, living room table and the front bedroom.....

Hope you are enjoying the snow........Mike
