olive drab ?

just wondering as it has always mystified me, was there an unwritten rule between the allies and axis armour regarding tank camo? allies were usually olive drab and axis camo of some description. why no O/D tigers? this is presuming ETO. and not africa. anybody know?

also how can i release superglue, having a real job getting the cupola and air intake pipes off my tiger. must have got a real jobsworth that built my tank

Allies tended to use Olive Drab as the base colour, there were camo schemes with either black circles or black random shapes over the olive drab but they mainly used camo nets and local foliage for camo, rather than the painted schemes the Axis forces used - just different approaches to concealment.

Maybach - Acetone releases superglue fairly well if you let it soak for a while. I'm not sure how it will effect the ABS plastic of the tank though. Fingernail polish remover has Acetone in it and will work also, just much slower. Still, Not sure on the effect on the tank plastic though.

I think americans used alot of olive drab...I saw some canadian tanks that were more hunter green...I guess it depends on the country! and probably depending on the color they could get during war time...

thanks for that fellas, so it was more down to factory finnish than anything on the allied side then, and the axis being their usual over efficient selves toward camo.

as to the glue issue, i have some spare sprue that i will try the nail varnish remover trick on to see if it affects it so thanks for that bulldog 01.

I do not know about removing glue I am still after all these years searching for the definative glue that will actually do what I want it to do, BLOOMING WELL STICK!!!!!

i'm presently using the umbrol cement for models...they say that it melts the plastics together, and the way to remove it is to put more cement so it remelt the parts? that's kind of weird but logical...dont think it works with glue tho...putting more glue on your glue will probably only make a bigger mess

Zap (and others) make super glue debonder but they are mainly for surface cleaning, so depends on how far in the glue is.

With my cupola I pretty much forced it off. I used the back of stanley blade and just eased my way around the lip until it gave. I managed to do it without damaging the cupola too, so the brute force option is always there.

Every glue release I've ever tried didn't work, at least not on the Heng Long tank. Heng Long seem to use poly cement that actually melts the plastic together, so glue release agents won't do much good. Be warned if you try to remove the frontal armour plate too. I removed mine in order to drill out the machine gun port for a metal replacement. It's not as thick as it looks and Heng Long seem to have used a whole tube of cement to attach the thing. It took about 2 hours to get it off and it cracked in the corner (thankfully I was able to repair with some putty)

The air intake pipes on the feifel cleaners aren't actually glued if memory serves, they are just jammed on with a run up. I cut mine off completely and shaved down the plastic stumps to allow the use of air pump piping, cut to length. It's pattern isn't to scale, but it's nicer than the original piping.
