Patented in the U.S. in 1909, a resin, Bakelite might be called the original plastic. Here's a bit of history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakelite By the time I was born, common use of Bakelite was waning, but it was still used a bit and still around. I remember the feel of a grungy Bakelite steering wheel.

Before Television became popular in the 50s everyone had a valve radio and without exception the "Wireless" was always made of bakelite.
