New tanker reporting in

Hey all,

Thought I'd introduce myself after recently catching the RC tank bug - I'm not quite sure how I got into all this but I now have a Taigen Pershing tank which I'm enjoying. :)

I was intending to get a Tiger 1 initially but the one I wanted wasn't available, so the Pershing was a worthy replacement. Although, I've always liked Tiger tanks ever since having a metal toy tiger as a kid, which never had any tracks on for some odd reason. :O

Now first things first, this seems like it could be a pretty expensive hobby depending on how far you want to take it, thankfully the gf is used to my funny hobbies by now so as long as I don't go crazy I have no worries there. :D

I have a couple of questions however that have cropped up after reading various forums, sites and watching a fair few rc tank videos lately, if you can answer any that would be great.

1) I've read that many replace their tanks gears for metal ones and reduced ratios etc, now my Pershing came with metal gears (and tracks) which seem to work well enough but I hear the 3:1 ratio gears give better power at low speeds and perhaps slightly more realistic movement. Now I've also seen 4:1 gear sets advertised, are these the same as the 3:1 version but with another extra gear added for even more range of speed?

2) Another gear question; now I like the sounds on the tanks but the gearboxes (I assume it's that, or the motors?) has a little whine to them that detracts from the sounds of the tracks and any sound mods - is there anyway to make the gearbox quieter, such as grease (or are better gearboxes quieter?) or by wearing them in a bit? Does this help a great deal with sound at all or is it just a case of having to drown it out with sounds mods like the elmod or standard s&s effects that come with the HengLong tanks?

3) Final question, for now. :)
My Pershing came with a bb turret, which if I'm honest I'll never really use as I'd much prefer a nice functioning recoil turret with a good sound. Now I've come across one turret and recoil package for the Pershing but it states some amount of adjustments would be needed to get it installed (some cutting etc) is this pretty much a given for most turret replacements? I take it there's more options out there for the Tiger tanks due to them being more popular?

Many thanks all, looking forward to tinkering with this tank and modding it - although my bank balance may not agree. :)

Hiyah Nerge , first off , WELCOME !
  • Gearboxes - your metal ones are the same gearing as the standard plastic types . The low ratio gears will give more torque / lower speed , as for 3/4 to 1 ratios I'm not sure there is any real difference ( it could depend on the drive sprocket dia. )
Yes , they will benefit from lubrication - It will damp the noise a bit too .
  • Converting to IR , the turret will be a direct swop , no fit issues . The wiring is different though ( have a browse through the archives - others have been there  )
. . . . " as long as I don't go crazy I have no worries there." . . .
;D wanna bet ? we've all said that !!!
