HL Truck Mods

Heng Long/WPL are now manufacturing 1/16 scale RC trucks, so it seemed sensible to create a forum area dedicated to the amazing things that members are doing with them. Post your builds, mods, and tips here.

Quick light test. What a mission it is to hide the wiring
Its going to need bigger side pods just to hide the wiring kits.

Guys I am curious if anyone has added the metal upgrades to these trucks. I bought the metal gear kit for the GAZ 66 which comes with metal components for the both front and rear diffs, including metal hubs for the wheels to mount to. My kit came short two machine screws as the threads are metric for the new hubs. This is a problem as I cannot find any in my spares bin. Also the metal driveshafts suck. The set screws are so small they do not tighten enough to hold to the pinion or the motor shafts. I installed the dual motors. I am very disappointed with the quality control of these upgrade kits and honestly think it takes away from the truck as a whole because upgrading them seems to be a dead end. I would not recommend making a tank transporter for anything but a show piece either. These things would need a ridiculous amount of work to haul anything. They have enough trouble carrying the little weight them have over any type of terrain.

The metal driveshafts that you have are a bit crap. i also have some. There are better ones out there, but loctite and cyano on the shaft should actually help, make sure the shafts also have a flat notch near the end aswell. You kind of have to weld them into the correct location and then hope you don't need to remove. The grub srews are soft!

These trucks however do not need soo much work. Yes you can spend a small fortune on one to pull a large load, but you would have to spend soo much more on something higher priced in the first place. So they still offer bang for buck.
Personally i have 12 in boxes and several others i have used to convert into something else.

Here are some pictures of extra work i been doing with my WPL trucks

My GAZ 34 with extra large fuel tanks! These i custom made to suit the light control unit. Yes they are a little too large, but this was the only way to hide the control box in a central location and not in the back. Need to tidy the cable run, but the lights work nicely. :)

Also another project, with the help of WPL/HL parts, this little 4x4 1/16 Mercedes SPrinter tipper will come to life :)

Fifth Wheel.

Post by jarndice »

I just bought a 1/16 Bruder 5th Wheel for under £5 + Post,
No Bells and Whistles but you can back onto a trailer and off you go although there is no way of releasing the trailer without lifting it clear but for £4 I am not complaining,
It comes with a detailed mounting plate that fits nicely onto the Chassis Rails of a WPL/Heng Long 4 or 6 wheeler Truck,
Just type in "Bruder 5th Wheel" into E-BAY.
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

I am working on a 5th wheel so that i can un-hitch using a servo and using a tamiya conversion plate on the bruder trailer. maybe i can share the stl files once completed
