G'day Mr Wardog, I seem to have better results doing it this way than trying to layer putty in anywhere near a consistent thickness across a flat surface.
Its awkward at times, but the result is durable, and fairly representative of the real stuff.

Trouble I have right now is with the move, and more specifically me being out of the game with my "jake-the-peg-leg" I actually have zero idea where my KT has disappeared to !! :wtf:
I know its here in the new joint, somewhere, but at the moment I would have more chance finding a sheep in long grass than my tank project :shh: :shifty:
A box they say.............yeah, there's only a hundred of them around here at the moment, I will go straight out to it :/

Some neat improvisations in the build (elevation unit etc.,), HB..and some real boldness with the Zimmerit.
When I bought my KT, it came with Tamiya's own zimmerit sheets, and I pondered long on hard as to whether to try them, or go for the Atak set many swear by ( and I would have sworn by them too, if I'd made a bad job of fitting them. They're not cheap... :problem: ) Once you fit the Tamiya sheets (Atak too, I imagine), removing them is practically impossible after a cock up, and since I wanted
my build to look neat like this:
Henschel-Krupp KT with zimmerit..
Henschel-Krupp KT with zimmerit..
and not like the slightly out-of-scale picnic basket I'd pictured myself making; my build valour disappeared rapidly. :| I still have the Tamiya sheets, incidentally .., but prefer the cast finish that already exists on the stock turret, personally. :) All King Tigers produced after Oct 1944 didn't have Zimmerit anyway (phew), and that provided me with the precedent I needed not to be so bold. :D

Hope the buggered pedal extremity is allowing you to get as far as the drinks cabinet  :D

Lol I have just seen the updates in this thread. I wont have the guts to attack the tank with a screwdriver and a soldering iron... The plastic in the king tiger is so thin that the risk of destroying the model is huge. Herman, you could work in neurochirurgie.
Also in the front lower hull there is no plastic so another option has to be found there.

I did my king tiger with milliput (as well as the PIV im working on) and I enjoyed doing it and it was quite easy to do. If you do mistakes you can remove it (In fact I unzimmerited the entire tank and started again)

I liked the turret cast texture a lot, but due to the lower hull does not have it, I just had to zimmerit the entire model.

Regarding the tamiya sheets, I wont use them. In fact I sold them but the parcel never arrived to the buyer for my pain :(

But again, for me, the white milliput makes the deal.

It could blind the gaming competition on a Summer's day shoot-fest
It looks a bit like a mobile military shaving mirror; but for those nether regions :lolno:
Each to their own, I suppose :|

With the tank now located, and my space set up close to right, I was able to get a bit done this evening.
I am still missing a box with other vital gear in it, such as my Ryobi/dremel tool, all my razor saws , and airbrush etc. :/ :problem:
Im certain they are here but I'm over carting & unpacking boxes for now.

All the hull zimmerit is done, apart from bits left blank to allow the fitting of track pulling cables and towing cable clamps.
The turret is clean of damaged zimmerit, but the hull has a few bits missing, going to assume that tree branches dont tear the stuff off as much as Bocage, stone walls, and other robust objects do.
All the edges under the mudguards are missing zimmerit coating in places, this also helps in not bowing the plastic out towards the stress-relieved side.
The sides have a tiny bit of bowing, but for what it is, I can live with it.
Overall, the melt method of zimmerit application for me is the most reliable in its effect, and consistent in its thickness & finish.
I'm picking this as a September '44 production-right at the end of zimmerit application on King Tigers, which can explain its reasonably good condition before capture.

If I can get close to this, I will be very happy..........

Herman, that zimmerit looks awesome.
Hold on, if the Tamiya plastic is that thin, and you didn't apply the zimmerit, how the hell did you make the damaged patches look like the zimmerit has fallen off???
