1942 Capture KV-2 754(r)

Alpha, I would have only attempted that with a smaller drill bit and under my magnifier because those last couple of holes were way off. ;o) Smart on me to have gone with some Tamiya mesh. Tonight I assembled, mounted and connected the NOTEK light. As a guy who approaches soldering with the same trepidation as if the hot iron was going to be applied to my bare skin, I was understandably cheered when I plugged the battery and connections in and flipped on the power. Pics can tell the tale:

They aren't metal... or Tamiya mesh covered... but they look ok lol

PS. Have you thought about how you are going to do the grills? Most of the Kv2s I saw when researching ....didn't have the taper on the turret side ..reason I modded mine

Thank you, I was worried about this bit, Alpha. I am glad that it came off all right. I do not have an Airsoft type firing LED to move to the back MG on the turret so I will probably just detail that one and leave it dark. The Germans didn't even put a gun there on most of the Captures I have seen so I am ahead of the game already. I definitely do not want to overdo the power from the board. Taigen is running the positive leads for the front MG and the headlight from the same connection on a mini-board. I was sweating adding the NOTEK light but the resistor that it came with did the job, thankfully. This is one of my favorite photos from your Build. You really get a sense of the height of that tall turret. Yes, your mesh job on those grills looks very, very good. The Tamiya mesh has the slope for the grill made into it so I will just leave the existing ribs and attach the mesh to them, hopefully from the underside, so that the braces will stand clear.

Doesn't the Taigen have a seperate port for the rear lights? The new Heng Long 2.4 does thought HL probably copied Taigen...I forgot to say how cool that Nortek light is ...that isn't the Mato right?... I had thought about putting one on my Panzer IV... thought about hooking it to the firing light circuit since I couldn't quite figure out how to make a rear convoy light didn't want to invest in a PE set just for that

The grills on my KV are just ok... they suit my purpose...kind of tricky working with that nylon screen...if you remember I actually tucked it under the frame by cutting slots in the mesh
Think yours will be better with the Tamiya PE

Taigen does have a port for the rear light and it works in reverse. That Notek light came from the rctank.de site and is manufactured by either an-bri-rcmodellbau or tank modelbau. I am not sure which one but it is a great little kit all by itself. I have a solid metal rear convoy light left over from the two packs of detail that I got from Forgebear. Let me know if you need one. Have a couple of the flat fender type Notek lights with the raised mount, not the stepped one, as well. They are just for detail, not illuminated tho' that could be done with some application of elbow grease. ;o)

I might take you up on that offer Painless... the 70 will probably need some of the small detail parts... She's a junker...so there isn't really much to her... I'll let you know once I get everything squared away...fun project that one... you should try it sometime

Alpha, A pleasure so let me know what you are missing from small details and I will see what I have. ;o) I have a 1/18 Pz 4 but would really like to have a nice 1/16 HL version or even better, a Wirbelwind based on the HL deck and Asiatam chassis. The Tamiya engine grill mesh came in the mail on Friday and looks like a good fit. Tonight, I was able to complete the exterior electrical wiring for the sirens and Notek light. Pics:

From a field point of view those conduits must have been vulnerable to spall and general service damage being exposed like that.
I guess the expected life on these captured leviathans was not that far thinking with parts & maintenance in mind, so quick & easy was a simple choice.

Preformed grills ...Pretty sweet Painless.... ...I will let you know about the little detail stuff... just not sure what I need at the moment as the build isn't to that point yet...been taking it easy on the building of late... need to get back on it ..

Herman, you are correct, Sir. Spall is something that would occur inside a tank from shell strike but the outside would be wrecked up pretty badly as well. According to Neal Stokes, the Germans did just that. They ran the Captures until ammo or spares ran out or they were lost in battle. I find it ironic to the extreme then that one of the last 'German' tanks in service was a KV-2 Beute'Panzer at the Kruppwerks at the end of the war.
