Well, it is time to start finishing the detail work on some of the “subassemblies” completed a “LONG TIME AGO” and other detail work needed to make this a complete model. Still plenty to do to get ready for the painting process.

First up is the mantel mount 50cal for the Counter Sniper Anti Material Mount “CSAMM”. Pip Pins, Pin Retainer Chains, Spotlight and Remote Trigger. Lots of tedious work here especially the Remote Trigger and its electrical connector. The Spotlight is built up of styrene strips and carved and sanded to final shape. I considered placing an LED in it but no acceptable way to hide the wiring. I found that the headlight lens from the Tamiya M1A2 kit fits quite nicely.

This assemble including the detail on the mantel itself are complete.

Superb Barry !

Did you like the metal AFV-Model Browning MG ?

I purchased one for the M-113A2 last year. I found the metal very difficult to modify, and for 36 Euros, the casting had major quality issues. I thought it was not acceptable for what seems to be a metal copy of the Tamiya M2. I would not buy another one, preferring an Aber barrel on a plastic Tamiya body. I am curious to see what you think of it.

Regards, Louis

Thanks you for the encouraging words Louis,

I agree, the metal is very hard and removing the cast details was very difficult and time consuming. You are also correct about the quality of the detail reproduction, not so crisp and it is a direct copy of the Tamiya M2 50cal. :O

My reason for using the casting was because I felt that with it hanging out there on top of the main barrel it would be robust enough to handle any bumps.

The Commanders 50cal will be the Tamiya molding with the Aber barrel.

After following this build for what seems forever (worth the wait) I have decided that this build is not up to your modelling skills and feel you can do better, therefore I feel its my obligation to let you give it to me (when its finished) so you can start a new one. :D :D :D :D

Seriously, I was a Navy guy and have seen plenty of display models the Navy has and your build Sir is on par with those multi million dollar models!!

Cheers!
Thanks you sir,

Comparing my work with that in Naval Museums is more than I think I deserve, one day perhaps.
I have a 1/350 USS New Jersey that I want to build in her 1969 fit and hope to be able to do her justice. I truly find warship builds as the pinnacle of modeling and just can't get enough of them.

Tanks again,

Thank you,

I have been following your M551 build.
I have one for myself and I'm torn between a Vietnam version or a Desert Storm version.

My eldest brother started off his work life as an apprentice making museum models of ships. And one of my friends was also a museum modeller, although he did sailing ships.

In later life I went for a job as a model maker, but they sadly didn't offer enough money :(
