Heng Long/WPL are now manufacturing 1/16 scale RC trucks, so it seemed sensible to create a forum area dedicated to the amazing things that members are doing with them. Post your builds, mods, and tips here.
Some updates coming from the M35 Deuce & 1/2. But i really need to get some other wheels to put narrower tyres and wheel rims on it. But for now i have just painted the truck up with what i have.
Going to call this Giraffe camo haha
Still got loads of parts to add, like lights, airfilter on right side wing. Canvas on back & on cab, new wheels and tyres. Lots of weathering.
Then its just mechanicals and electrics to upgrade. This one is getting the longer can motor as comes in DIY kit.

A truck which i am just finishing off for a friends son
M35 A2 4x4 desert camo troop carrier.
Rear tailgate hinged, also has hinged benches inside. Driver fitted for good measure. I think the drivers head is going to move on a micro servo!
Front bumper swapped from another kit to get tow shackles. Needs a good weathering and then finish the kit with lights and electrics!
This one is also getting a larger motor fitted for more torque. Mario's truck gets windows and front tow shackles by Will Pattinson, on Flickr

Just dropped them on for a picture. More details by Will Pattinson, on Flickr
Although the cab canvas needs to go down back of the cab, so that one needs remade.
As for the M35A2 4x4, i am als making a canvas hood for that truck, but leave the canvas rolled up on the back of the cab. Should also look quite cool when it is finished.
Just need to get some of those M35 wheels now and buy some tyres
Next project i am focusing in on is a tank!

Hi Chaps,
a little update with regard my WPL 6x6 kit that I started, well I couldn't wait for the new 2 speed motor and gearbox to arrive so I went ahead and built it with the standard 180 motor and gearbox that it comes with, the kit version has all drive pinions in brass and the centre crown wheel also in brass and comes with the central axle already constructed, plus a good quality servo for steering and a good servo tray for its location, all of these I think are upgrades on the RTR version.
A mod I have done to my model is to lower the motor gearbox in the chassis frame rails this will straighten out the drive shafts quite a bit and is very easy to do so should reduce a lot of strain off the drive shafts, I have lowered the gearbox by approx. 13 to 14 mm and has helped enormously, the pics should be self explanitary but basically I made two Aluminium plates in a L shape and used the mounting holes already on the gearbox where it screws in between the chassis rails then made two new mounting holes 13 mm above these this is where it bolts into the chassis if you make one of the holes in the same location of one of the existing now unused mounting holes in the chassis rail you only have to drill one hole for mounting.
The L shape is necessary so as to allow the rear of the cab to fit on to the chassis rail and bold as normal.
Another mod was to strengthen the plastic drive shafts this was accomplished by obtaining so interference fir 1/32 aluminium tube to go over the input side of each drive shaft I the used a dremmel with a barrel shaped grinding bit that just fitted into the Ali tube to open it up so it just was a tight fir onto the drive shaft, I then applied super glue to the shaft and GENTLY tapped on the Ali tube, when dry I drivlled and tapped it 2 mm to accept a grub screw and filed a flat on each of the brass drive pinions and pressed home the drive shafts and tightened up the screw... no more splitting drive shafts or slipping ones, pic should make it clear.
Also I tightened up the rear two axles by fitting bushes where the link rods fit as there is way too much travel on these again pics should tell all.
Hope its of interest / Use to some of you chaps.

Looks good and nice mods
Do the bushes still allow the twin axles to move and twist?
Interesting info about the kit having brass driveline parts.

Hi.
Thx for you interest.
The bushes take all the slop out of the links and the suspension now works much better as it positively holds the axles where they should actually be, ie no front to back movement. The problem is that the holes in the links are slightly oversize for the screws plus the screws dont pull the links far enough accross and leave approx 3mm of gap where the link can float about and cause the axles to move front to back on the gap thus letting them effectively pull the axle out of allignment, think of it like having a worn suspension bush on a car, the axle / wheel floats all over the place and with no loss of up / down suspension travel with the bushes fitted. I was going to make some more accurately fitting drag links but thought id try the bushing first as it was easier and it has worked a treat. I ran the truck all day Sat on grass muck tarmac and concrete at an event on various gradients and the suspension worked perferctly as it should and could be seen going up and down..i have a video somewhere of it...the model now has working head lights and a Diesel engine start run sound system fitted that is proportional to the motor speed all working from a switcher unit, my aim is to get it to look like a Deuce and a half eventually.
