Re: Another SAUNDERS SHERMAN
All I have on that is perhaps with the early British experience in the desert with the higher speeds and the dust storm this created, that it was for added visibility from the travelling vehicle, and to try to mitigate the tell tale cloud.
This perhaps extended to the later marks.
Its indicative of almost every 'in action' picture Ive seen with a Sherman that they never seem to have partial skirt/guards fitted from damage or loss, (like a venerable panther or KT,) they are either all intact, or all gone.

By early experience I meant with the light cruiser- valentine - vickers types well enshrined with guards/skirts before the Sherman made the scene.

I would say that is exactly correct Herman.. the skirts were probably left on the Shermans to keep of the dust and sand that would fly up in the desert ... and probably the reason why American and other allied forces in the European front took them off... as they were confronted with forestry and shall I say a more varied exposure to weather...and because of the thinner "legs"... caused mechanical problems should the thin shields be dented in any way... they are by far different from the German Skirts on their Panzers JagdPanzers King Tiger...where the armor was thicker... I would estimate up to three or four times thicker.. as the Germans had shall I say ... Home Field advantages....they would dent ...sure... but were thick enough or resilient enough to not interfere with the running of the drives ..and if they were... they were promptly removedHERMAN BIX wrote:All I have on that is perhaps with the early British experience in the desert with the higher speeds and the dust storm this created, that it was for added visibility from the travelling vehicle, and to try to mitigate the tell tale cloud.
