But in general, obviously, you are right. Different developments lead to different doctrines/methods/counter-developments etc.
Best example here would be the AMX 30 and the Leopard 1 - Built on the assumption that HEAT warheads would be able to penetrate any sort of steel armour with impunity, thus mobility was paramount, to be able to engage the enemy first before he engaged oneself. Then composite armour came along and changed everything up.
