Mick.
Ive seen the reference to a particular tank being 'sponsored' by a village or suchlike that they finished daubed in slogans for the front, and out of sheer desperation that could have been the case when a tank or tanks were sent to combat as soon as they were operational and skipped the paint, but no definitive pictures seem to show this..................a bit like the German equivalent of sending Tanks out in red oxide primer, but I kind of made that plausible with some of the pics of my Jagdtiger :problem:

Also, a lot of reports indicate that T34's of all makes had such a high attrition rate that they seldom survived long enough to break down, but they did break down at times.
History will carry on the debate into eternity

Learning as I go on the best way to get the look I want.
Made a texture coat out of weathering set, pastels and turps, added in a bit of rubber black to darken things.
Applied it to the necessary areas to give the impression of blistered paint and residue.
A light oxidisation to cover.
Gave the entire tank a wash of darkbrown, and once dry, another of tan for dusting.
Burnt the roadwheels & gave them a wipe over of white, then washed that in.
Im feeling a bit more confident with it now.
The effect is close to what I reckon a hulk would be like after a reasonable term exposed to the elements, without being there for years & going orange.
Lots to do yet, including the base.

How'd I do ?
You've convinced me, boss. The colours and effects are all spot-on, it looks just like the aftermath of a catastrophic fire. The wash has tied everything together really well, too. Definitely on its way to something great!
Tiggr wrote:The rust question is an interesting one - for example the Tiger 1 was made of a manganese steel (mostly RHA) which was rust resistant and also gave the steel a certain amount of elasticity which is why many AP shells bounced off the Tiger 1 - also one of the reasons the one on display in Normandy isn't a pile of rust.

On the other hand, T34s were produced in such large numbers, they were probably basic normal carbon steel, so would rust readily....
Soviet armour plate contained more than the minimum amounts of nickel, manganese and molybdenum than was necessary to provide adequate resistance (since they weren't constrained by resources like the Germans were). Some of the issues with vulnerability to the bigger German guns were more due to the fact that the T-34's armour was overhardened (which gave it better protection against mid-calibre German weapons). The T-34 at Bovington hasn't rusted.

Really though, any kind of steel is going to oxidise when exposed to high enough temperatures (like from an ammo/fuel explosion and subsequent fire). Either way I'd say It's more about portraying the effect in scale here, letting the vignette tell the story.

Not as a matter of course, but I've also read that semi-completed tanks were driven straight out the factory doors at STZ during the battle of Stalingrad crewed by workers firing from open sights. I don't imagine those tanks were ever going to last long enough to make it to a maintenance crew, though.

Got the base underway.
Used a bit of leftover marine ply that I had from my battlefield bridge build.
Gave both sides a good coat of satin clear varnish to seal the wood & reduce the effect of warping to the damp side.

Used a few bits of ribbed cardboard & lengths of packing from a server cabinet we got at work.
PVA glued to the base after it was dry.
Squashed the edges of the cardboard after they were dry to reduce the square edges.
Covered the lot in PVA straight from the pack, and placed a dampened camping towel over the top.
Then washed a diluted PVA seal over that to solidify the lot.

Want to simulate a heavy item sinking under its own weight over time.

Real dirt, debris, and grass patches will be used to finish.
The subject picture is lacking context, but I would say its out on the plains after a period of quiet, the Germans having advanced past it, then being forced to take advantage of it on the retreat defense.

The cloth is a good idea. Thanks for bringing this up again. Almost forgot about that although I applied the technique when building sword scabbards.

Got a bit more done.
The tank has had a wash over, and the tracks got a brew of hull red, German Grey, Red Brown and a wash of MIG Tan for Yellow Green.
The base is fully dry & will hopefully get its debris coat this weekend.
Hopefully the slightly raised contour should allow the tank to appear sunken in , while still enabling the entire base to be easily blended into a battlefield, or look right as a stand alone display at my mates house.
I like the look of both tracks derailed, but thats not set in stone yet, its not my set up, so I dont have the final say on the aesthetics.
He has given me 'Carte-Blanche' to do what I like, but I would rather deliver something he would like to have done himself.

I copped a preview of some Soviet tank riders last weekend................trust me, he will get it his way so I get them my way !!
He does such an amazing job on figures so I am happy to help the guy out as long as he wants me to.

Getting to the end now.
Almost ready to hand it over to the owner for its MG crew.
Used a mix of dirt, tea leaves, and various bits to cover the base.
Once the centre section was dry, I poured a slurry of PVA into the track marks & placed the tank.
No point having it look like its not integrated, so fixed in place it is.
Then set about covering the rest of the base in an irregular coat of grass & debris to blend the tank into the base as if it had sunken in over time.
I'm pretty happy with it over all.
A tow rope, and some other bits & its off to get its MG crew.
