Checking out some of the research I did for the 'Palace' and photos from 'Stalin's Giants' , there is no hinge on the back plate for the 'Big Barn' turret. It was bolted on and used primarily ( supposedly) as a means to remove the main gun for repair.

But the gun was bolted on at the front for easy removal. Also I can't see them loading all the 152mm ammo through the commanders hatch.

But if they only built a few (maybe 4 from reading one of the books?) perhaps it was decided it was a bad idea in the field?

Just been looking through "Tankograd Soviet Special 2001 KV-2 Soviet Breakthrough Heavy tank of WWII" and at they back it says that they don't even know what the inside of the production turret looks like as there's no photos or records and the only surviving tank has been sealed up

ok, i did alittle reseach too, looks like the rear plate was bolted in place as you guys mentioned. and the handle on the top was a lift ring. so for the model, would you like it a detatchable plate or make it into a swing door for just the ergonomics of not having it lost somewhere in the lawn or something?
you can barely see the bolt holes

There's only two holes and lots of bolts in the hatch.

Giganaut,
I'll be happy however you print it out. ;o) The 'Big Barn' version is a unique and totally cool example of Soviet heavy tank production.

was actually looking at the very very blurred bumps next to those 2 holes. the gray color has a slight yet uniformed difference along where the bolted hatch is supposed to be

Hiya Gig's - Is this better ?
. . . it looks like the double holes on the rear plates are for rudimentary mg / pistol ports with a smaller sighting one above . . .

yes i know those are the pistol ports actually. i meant the bolt holes where the hatch door are supposed to be, so its just a big fat plate bolted onto the back of the turret but good call on that underside bracket, im gonna rework that one

Looks like the model makers were leading me up the garden path (so to speak).
This pic shows bolt holes along the top of the opening-
In this internal one you can just about make out some sphere like features
And there's definitely no split down the middle as some model kits do. Also the models have the handle off to one side whereas this is in the centre.
