Getting closer to the end, wish I had better light in this place, it's like the black hole of Calcutta at this time of year. The camera always picks up the glare in the oxide powders, the corrosion is barely visible when the tank is in front of me. It is all running and working, has plastic gearboxes with the slipper clutch glued solid with araldite. Need to change the servo position as it doesn't have enough clearance when the barrel is on full elevation.

Currently painting stowage, cans, rucksacks etc, and a commander. Will give the tank a light dusting with the airbrush as well to weather it a bit, so the next pics will be of it completely finished.

Still need to decide which electronics to go in there. Interestingly I went on You Tube to listen to a real Pershing, and found that the Tamiya sounds are different to the real one. I am going to load in the Pershing sounds that are on my Elmod Eco at some point and see what they are like.

and just for good measure, an in depth look at the Pershing.

It was quite an advanced tank for the time.

Tamiya recorded the Pershing sounds from a real one in the states, not sure why it sounds different.

They did the same with the Tiger/KT. One has to ask whether this was a publicity thing, as the video below shows what they were recording, but as with the Pershing, what is on the MFU isn't quite the same?

Real KT start up:

Real Tiger start up:

Tamiya:

One has to bear in mind that the Tamiya electronics are quite old by comparison to the modern stuff, so there were going to be limitations on what they could do with their sound modules at the time that they were created.

The sound of that KT and Tiger starting is great, such a thing to watch. I loved being at Bovington seeing them roll around :)

Apparently the engine wasn't running properly when they recorded it back then, which explains the difference in sound (On the tiger)

Now I thought that I was just going to be building a tank and putting a board in there, this has nothing to do with the tank, but I thought I would relate it as I have nothing else to do while I am waiting for some paint to dry.

I have an Elmod Board in my Panther, so first of all I check the battery is ok by switching it on and...a funny whining noise...which seems to be stripped gears on the recoil servo. That's the third servo out of that batch of 4 that I bought that has either jammed solid or stripped gears...ho-hum. Put that to one side for later, and go to try the Pershing sounds.

The Elmod configuration program is in two programs. One is handled via a USB link between the PC and the board, the other is via the SD card. The programs are designed to run on PC with Windows, or a Mac. I use Linux. Months ago I had these programs running under Linux with no problems, but since then various Linux updates have been installed, as have updates to the software that enables Linux to run Windows programs. The Elmod software won't run now. Went through various possibilities, old version of Java etc, but the PC will not recognise the USB link, nor will it run the sound manager on the SD card. I also see that there is a firmware update that I downloaded that enables both the sound and the tank dynamics to be handled via the USB, as well as add functionality. I can't do that either. :eh:

Then had a brainwave. I still have Vista on a hard drive. I can't install the hard drive in the PC as new PC hardware is designed not to run XP/Vista. But...I have an old laptop which also has Linux on it. It suddenly occurred to me that if I buy an external drive caddy, I can hook the HDD up to the laptop via USB, and hopefully boot up Vista on the laptop. So, I just ordered a caddy, and I will know within a few days whether my mad idea will work.

See, I said it was nothing to do with tanks. :P

W.W.,
Sound is something that is very important to the realism of these vehicles. Thanks for showing us some of the complexities involved in getting it right. I love to just sit and listen to the engine ticking over on a built tank sometimes. ;o) Another bad servo?, Ouch! Following along.

Well it's all done and dusted, excuse the pun. Will take some natural daylight pics when I can. The commander 'Len Hong' came out quite nicely. I am trying to get the look it would have had the last day it was in battle, just before it went into the scrapyard.

If anyone knows whether the markings eg '2' and 'A' shown on the scrapyard pics were id numbers for the battlefield, or for the scrap id, I would love to know.
