Took that screw out and filed off the pointed end.
Also filed that round plastic part just in front of the screw's end.
Took the right side track off too to check that screw but it was okay on that side.

Well sorted! This is one of the reasons that l always take a new vehicle out of the box, check it is working and if all appears okay....strip is down to the last nut and bolt and rebuild it properly, lubricating as l go.

As you have found, and its the same with all manufactures, the individuals who built them at the factory do not feel the same love you do for your new baby!

By the way, if that was a deck/hull screw, it should have been screwed in from below, not the top? Weird.

I am not sure if it was screwed in the wrong way.
When the body/ upper hull or whatever that thing is called, is off the tank, and you look at those screws I was talking about, they are sunk in the bracket which holds the rear end from the tank onto the lower hull. So I presume they are screwed in the proper way. But as I am new to this hobby, I might be wrong.
Will shoot a pic later to show you.

Please do. It's not the fixing l thought it might be but there aren't any other screws that should extend into the path of the track, not on my Panther or Jagdpanther.

However, looking on the Forgebear site there is an excellent photograph showing a metal hull Panther and the offending screw(s) are rather obvious. As you say, they hold the rear plate to the hull but someone has fitted a screw that is too long and it has protruded through to the track!

Your fix is fine, or use a correct length screw BUT it now begs the question, is the other side okay or has an overlong screw been used there too?

Glad there had been no lasting damage done.

It will likely be the locking mechanism that secures the upper hull to the lower (quick release)
I suppose a slightly long screw is a good problem to have considering the alternative

No, it is not the locking system.
