In my opinion you shouldn't feel the need to buy a special wood paint. Usually the handles should be made from hardwoods. Freshly cut staves usually have a very light sand/brown colour that darkens over time. Use the pale brown or even sand. Some that I have seen used highlight flesh colour. Then darken it down with brown wash as much as u like. I have a few pole arms with ash shafts. In the beginning they had sand brown appearance and have now darkened to yellowish reddish browns. Put in dust, dirt, grime and you are good. But what I can tell you for sure. From already a few meters away you don't see even the slightest grain in the wood. That is wood for tools not for furniture or art.

Pete I would be wary of using those clamps they are extraordinarily delicate,
They look good when painted but you will be driven to both drink and insolvency using them.
I would recommend the Shapeways Hinges though.

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway! I have made the towing pin - see photo, with chain as we discussed earlier, where would the end of the chain fit on the vehicle, please? I am thinking make a fitting with 1 mm thread and nut and screw to the back plate, what do you think?

On Mikes Tiger 1 , I attached the end of the Tow Pintel chain to one of the two bolts at the bottom of the mount. I drilled out the molded on bolts and used replacement scale metal bolts. Attaching a link of the chain to one made it stand out a little from its mate but the mount is basically under the tank and the difference is very slight. I'm not sure if it is canon to the vehicle but it worked and I am not a rivet counter at any rate. ;o)

Wouldn't they just weld it on? Either the last link or a ring to attach the chain to? Or oven a hole in the bracket itself?

I went with the Tamiya part which had the opening for the chain at the top. I could have soldered the chain to one of the bolts at the bottom of the mount but I was going for a mount which wouldn't be pulled apart if Mike caught the chain on scrub or summat while running it.
