And the crawler will be here the day after so now I have a decision to make. Kubel or Jeep or buy another crawler and do both? I might do a video of the jeeps later on to see what you guys think.

Kubel's here, tomorrow the crawler. I don't think it will come as any surprise that I'll play with it as a crawler at least for a little while.
This thread has turned out to be a real education for me. I learned some good stuff about die cast collectibles, and Painless was a big help there. Got a real schooling in the Danbury Mint Jeep, and Greengiant was a big help with that one. Those things are actually pretty fascinating. The third one showed up, in good shape but definitely not new. All the original paperwork, including the five stubs for the five payments of $27. I did a video of the three together (yeah, I know, it's the right front tire, not the left, Doh!), and now I have to figure out which to do first, the Jeep or the Kubel. I'm leaning heavily towards doing the Kubel first, since Jeff has blazed the trail so well, and that will sharpen my skills for the Jeep. I know people will boo and hiss, but I might make it front wheel drive only. That would solve a LOT of headaches, and it's not like I expect it to perform like a real 4WD vehicle. It will run around mainly on the smooth dirt roads in my village, so I'm seriously considering it. I'm only planning to RC one of the Jeeps to start with, and see how it goes. I'm pretty sure I'll do at least one more later on, so maybe I'll do front wheel drive this time and 4WD the next. The Kubel will be 4WD with the plane jane out-of-the-box paint scheme.
I even learned a few things about VW staff cars, thanks to Alpha. A staff car is definitely on the to do list. The paperwork that came with this Kubel says i can order parts from the manufacturer but I'm not sure that's still valid. I wouldn't mind picking up a few sets of these balloon tires and use them for things like Beetle staff cars. But, since I've pretty much completely blown the budget for the immediate future I need to get busy on the stuff already waiting. Hell, I've still got an Opel Blitz that needs to be painted and hooked up.
There's a good question - who has a Blitz and did you do a build log?
Anyway, the Jeeps ...

For the prices you got them for they turned out to be what I would expect based on my experience. At least by moving parts to one you should be able to have one that is complete (less the Mirror) and then 2 to play around with modifying. Will look forward to seeing how your rc ing of one goes when you have time for it. Maybe in a build thread with lots of pics. Have fun with it.
Hi Guys, I wasn't planning to do much video of the crawler itself but I got to thinkin' (dangerous, I know) and there might be a lot of guys that get some ideas about these things. This is my first 1/24 scale crawler and i'm very impressed with it. I can see myself using these for a variety of projects. They are kind of scary when it comes to cost, but I think the finished product will be well worth what I invest. So far it's $150 for the Kubel and $140 for the crawler. I can see a well made RTR Kubelwagen selling for that much easily. That's not much more than I paid for the Torro halftracks, and it's ten bucks less than I paid for the stock Tamiya RC Kubel in this video (but that had $50 shipping on top of the $250 price). And have you checked the price of a puma? Yikes! I'm thinking I can easily use the running gear from one of these crawlers to make an M3 scout car. I'd love to hear thoughts on that - an M3 Scout. I have a 1/18 M16 halftrack (static) that i could use for a body. I bet I could use one of the less expensive Temper Crawlers for that, and use nimh batteries for that one (the main reason I went with the Losi was to use 7.4 lipos, as opposed to 4.8 nimh). Or am I getting delusions of grandeur? I better get the Kubel done first, eh?

Looked through my jeep picture and found one of those with the added armor. Would be a good choice for one of yours that is missing a lot of stuff and leave you with items to put on one of the more complete ones.
I didn't do it on mine but the wheel snow chains would be a neat thing to do.
The sloped added "armour" would have been from late in the war after the Germans started stringing wire across roads to decapitate anyone driving down the road. That armour would protect the driver and passengers from those wires and probably small arms fire.
Never was an official kit but field modified in many different forms by different units to offer some small protection as we moved quickly into Germany and open jeeps patrolling or even just being used to run messages found themselves being shot up by German troops bypassed by our quick advances. The only thing that seemed to be common to them all was the steel plate at the grill and the removal of the windshield, rearview mirror and that the plating in the front seat area fit inside the body tub to the floor.
