Hey folks, a little update on my Cromwell, I shall post a video later but I've swapped out the IBU2 and adds a Clark tk-60 (still on 3s), I've converted the recoil to servo and added an LED flash. (Pictures to follow). I've installed the last bolts on the hull so now she's not far off paint.

Finally I've managed to figure out the hidden battle system. First off I had to add an ir emitter. The gun barrel and muzzle break is far too small so next option is in the mantlet (which isn't much better) first thought was to install under the mg mount but when the gun was depressed it would obscure the emitter. I settled on removing the turret mg and using the hole to mount the emitter. I enlarged the hole in the mg cradle as far as it will go but remains to be seen if it causes a (large) drop in emitter performance.

Currently not sure if I'm going to mount the emitter tube flush with the mantlet.

Next issue was the positions for the hidden battle unit.

Front and rear sensors weren't too bad as they could go in the perescopees in the cupola.





I opened the pistol ports so a left and right could be installed:





Once all that's done, a little more detail and some paint.

Masterpiece!!!

My Cromwell kit has just arrived, and it's a novel experience seeing a perfectly flat British tank. I ordered the basic kit and a few other bits to begin with, as I'm not planning to start this-my scratch-build Rite of Passage- until well into the New Year. Then, I'll order all those alluring extras...but not the Rolls-Royce wheels. £300 is just too OTT for me.The plastic ones look fine, and should suffice: but I will get the special metal sprockets with all those micro bolts. While I'm currently like a pig in s**t at the thought of having my own Cromwell, when considering the likely outlay in blood, sweat and expletives..not to mention dosh, and getting webbed fingers from all that glue.., I'm thinking that you were a lucky b**tard getting that beauty of yours at such a bargain price
When I get started, I'll post a build thread, but possibly pick your online brain for tips..if that's OK. Anyway,here's the two-dimensional Cromwell:

That's awesome 43rd rr! Like ok forward to seeing how you get on. I've the plastic wheels and they're fine. There's quite a bit of bolt detail you can add if you're feeling brave.

Didnt know Ikea made these things flat-pac-tank !!

Tom - No idea if this will help with the IR emitter, bit Infra Red will pass straight through certain plastics, acrylic being one of them, and some colours are better than others. If the mg surround, or just the end bit was made from it, the beam should go through uninterrupted.

Brilliant build, can't wait to see it completed.

Now that's some food for thought rob! Thanks for that, I'll investigate further.

Been a while since I posted an update on this one on here, quite a bit done.


Firstly the hidden battle system. Gary "Thetankman" page kindly reworked the vampire wiring loom for me, making the leads longer and removing the "bundle". I had to do some head scratching about placement on this one, I try and avoid drilling holes in the turret sides to place sensors as they're hard to hide. The cupola was an easy option for two but getting the left and right ones looked tricky. The solution was to open up the pistol ports on the turret giving a natural hole for the sensors to go behind.

Next job was the tidy up the electical installation and improve access to the on off switch and the volume.




Now the fun part, the detail! I found a decently walk around and made a start. So far I've added the lifting eyes to the turret, welds to the ending deck, clamps to the storage bins, details to the search light, fitted the giant hockey stick thing, attachment for the tow cable, brackets for the two cables and added the tools and brackets.
