It’s from SGS Electronics. Their page is all in German. He’s assured me it will take up to 40v, I’ve been talking with him for a while about this.

That's interesting, I've not seen that before. I tried translating the PDF manual and took a glance at it, though not everything was clear. It seems this device wants to do turn mixing, which you will not want, since that is going to be handled by the TCB. You might want to verify there is a way to turn that completely off on the speed controller and have it function purely as a dual ESC with no internal mixing.

There is a way to turn the mixing off and have it be just motor 1 and motor 2, I verified with the maker.

The ESC you used may have also had a momentum feature. A lot of the Quicrun ESCs have a programming card that can control a bunch of other functions like momentum.

So I recently hooked up a regular servo to the TK 8.1 and it behaved as I would have expected, up makes the servo rotate one way, down makes it rotate the other. When the stick goes to neutral the servo stops moving. So I’m guessing that that last speed controller just had some kind of car based mixing.

I have the a Sabertooth in my possession now, just waiting for the TCB from MotionRC, then maybe I’ll play around with it while I wait for the drive ESC and the DasMikro.

It will be easier to simply control the relay by the airsoft port directly. Just get any generic automative relay, and connect the two relay coil terminals (polarity doesn't matter) to the NEG and POS pins of the Airsoft header on the TCB. Your higher voltage power to the airsoft motor will be run through the relay's COM and NO terminals.

So I finally got around to plugging an automotive relay in and attempting to get the Airsoft working, but I’m only getting slightly under 12v output to the Airsoft motor.

Here is my set up:

12v going to the TCB

TCB Airsoft positive going to 86 on relay

TCB Airsoft signal going to the positive wire on the Airsoft motor limit switch

TCB Airsoft ground going to 85 on relay AND the ground on the Airsoft limit switch

40v positive going to 30 on the relay

Positive wire running from 87 to the Airsoft motor

40v ground going to the ground on the Airsoft motor

I have the positive wire coming from 87 and the 40v ground hooked up to my multimeter and I get 11.2v for a couple of seconds after triggering the shot, then it drops back to 0v. Again since I am running 40v in to 30 and out from 87, I’m expecting to get 40v out.

Any idea where I’m going wrong?

Happy days! I got it to work, here is what I did

I ran the 40v ground for the Airsoft motor through the relay and connected 40v positive directly to the motor. While I got 40v on the multimeter after doing this, I didn’t get a response from the motor. Switched the polarity of the wires to the Airsoft motor, and bingo, works as it should.

I remembered that Taigen has their turret electronics set up this way, where the elevation and the Airsoft motors have a common positive, and then a separate ground for each motor.

So that was my last really big hurdle for getting this going (except I think I blew my DasMikro when I blew my speaker amp… so waiting on a new one of these). I’ve got barrel elevation functioning correctly, traverse is working correctly and is running through the turret stabilizer from SGS, which is also working. Drive motors are working.

All I have to do now is wait on a new DasMikro, tidy up the wiring, hook up some servos, plug everything in. I think I burnt out my headlights to though.

Anyways, the hard part is over!

Ha ha, I guess it's not a real tank build if you don't let the smoke out of something. Thankfully the DasMikro and headlights are not the expensive pieces. I'm glad you got the airsoft working!
