I looked into getting one of these, and even scratch building one, I also asked Michael C about his Comet, he used a T34 lower, Leo 2 wheels and suspension arms. It worked out a bit cheaper that way. If the Comet and the Cromwell share the same wheels then it follows that the Leo 2 wheels will also fit the Cromwell, just in case anyone is thinking of spending £300 on roadwheels! 8O

That's a great buy Tom, the Cromwell is an excellent tank.

I've been grappling with the Cromwell all week, I hooked up the electrics fairly easily but had the resolder a wire onto the recoil and replaced the micro switch that triggers the flash. Had a bit of trouble wiring the speaker but got there in the end.

First run showed some issues, the bolt the hold the steel toothed rings on the body of the sprocket didn't leave clearance for the guide horns so forced the tracks off the sprocket. There was an issue with one side periodically seeming to catch on something. This week I've had the tracks off wheels off, checking alignments, altering the idlers to they're now retained straighter. I took the sprockets appart (30 odd bolts tiny per side) because the teeth were screwed.

I drilled out the suspension arm road wheel shaft holes as they hadn't been drilled straight. Took out the gearbox and shimmed it so that it wasn't catching on the output bearings. Added an extra washed nineteen the road whee halves so the guide teeth had a bit move room and hopefully wouldn't keep riding up onto the wheels. After all this it was still periodically slowing and seemingly catching, tank narrowly avoided being booted out the garage.....Having taken a breath I took the track off and notice things weren't smooth. I could wiggle the sprocket freely all the way round which discounted the gearbox. Eventually I tried plugging into the other motor output, smooth as silk. So seems all along the issue was with one motor channel of the rx 18 running in one direction. Swapped the plugs around, reversed the channels and all was well.

All the fettling done hasn't been wasted though as I think it has improved things.

Now having run it properly it seems on the slow side, so I'll be changing up to an ibu2 base and run it on 3s

I've posted this before, but I think it's worth a second or third airing because of the quality of the models, and the superbly filmed diorama. This Comet appears to be based on an M41 chassis, but when I compare it with the pics I took of the Bovington beauty, they're close enough to make me wish I had this one too, as well as your Cromwell! ;D Presumably the M41 could be used as the basis for the Cromwell or the Comet. Maybe even the upper hulls could be made interchangeable, so you could have a Comet one day and a Cromwell the next...if the return rollers could be made detachable. Just a thought :eh:

As she's was looking a little slow I swapped out the dbc3/benedini with an ibu2 running on 3s. I think she now lives up to the speed an manoeuvrability of the real thing.

And yes the exhaust cowl is on backwards :S

Very, very tasty. Yep, the Cromwell's speed and manoeuvrability were legendary..so much so, I think they had to fit governors to the engine to limit it. Can yours do this now ? :

Should you ever decide to part with it..let me know. After Xmas, I'm going to order the basic Comet from Chris, as there looks to be a little more room inside for batteries etc..
Once you've ironed out all niggles, you'll have a real gem there.
My Dad's old Recce Regiment had a few Cromwells associated with it, and that's another reason I'l like to get or build one, someday...

I'll have to setup a jump!

I wouldn't worry about internal room, there's tones even in the Cromwell, about because the suspension isn't very invasive you feel like your getting more than another similar sized tank.

The only mechanical upgrades now are to change the recoil to a servo and tweak the elevation position, aside from that she's spot on. I'm tempted to do a comet at some point, just love the 17lber

I will fight you. :-<

Performance looks great with the higher voltage and the IBU2 pushing it, it does the Meteor proud. Are you still going to do the hidden battle unit? You could probably hide sensors and LEDs in the turret rivets, or use the rivets as plugs to cover them up when it's not battling.
