Jack, In the United Kingdom there are specific bans on the ownership, carrying and use of certain weapons, for instance possession of a hand gun carries a minimum sentence of 5 years imprisonment.
The possession or carrying of a hand gun is limited to an on duty firearms trained police officer, or an on duty serving member of Her Majesty's Armed Forces,
You will almost certainly get a jail sentence or a heavy fine for possession of an unsheilded blade in a public place, this includes so called "Flick knives" unless you can demonstrate good reason, this does not apply to clasp knives, Swiss army knives or multi-tools.
BUT THE LAW IS MORE CONCERNED WITH "INTENT", ANY OBJECT CAN BE CONSIDERED A WEAPON "IF ITS USE AS SUCH CAN BE PROVED"
That carries a maximum penalty of LIFE Imprisonment.
We still get our share of violent crime but mass killings in public places by individuals and non terrorist organisations using Guns and Blades have pretty much disappeared.
The ownership of a Shotgun is lawful within certain limitations although ownership of a "Pump Action Shotgun" is prohibited.
I hope that helps you understand the difference between the UK and the USA in our legal attitude to weapons.
Perhaps I should add that most citizens do not consider these restrictions as a limitation on their rights but rather the actions of a community caring for the common good? :lolno:

Just like Jack...I usually carry at least a knife...not necessarily for defense ...it's just a good tool to have....If I do forget to pack a knife...I'm always looking to the sides and surroundings for things to use should there be any sign of trouble ;)

Shaun, over here the attitude is the difference between a citizen and a subject is a citizen can own a gun for defense.

I carry a folding knife, true it has a 6 inch blade and a lock that will never fail, it's more a military style knife but it's legal to carry because the blade can fold into the handle.

As for guns the only people who can legally carry in Maryland are police and if you have a business and have been the victim of an armed robery. But some how Baltimore has the highest murder rate of any city it's size and is #2 in total murders in the US. I live 4 blocks south of Baltimore.
