Just bought a faulty Heng Long Tiger

Tried to order a set of gears from dingding, paid for but never arrived - supposedly been credited but the refund hasn't hit my card yet. I ordered another from tankforce1 - I'll let you know if it arrives. Yes the credit hit paypal so I suppose we must give dingding acknowledgement for making it good.

Hi Alpha, I just did an ebay search for plastic gears for the tiger 1 before ordering, and I've just checked and forgebear doesn't list them, as I would have recognised the name and gone with him. I don't want to fork out for metal gears (which he sells) until I know the tank is working ok. Thanks anyway.

Dave has loads of stock, but he doesn't always list it all on Ebay, so it is always worth sending him a PM to see if he has what you are looking for.

Going with the plastic gearboxes is a good way to get the tank up and running, and even if you decide to fit steel ones later, I can guarantee you that you will make use of the plastic ones on another build at some time in the future. There used to be loads on Ebay for £5 or so, but they don't seem to appear nowadays. I would buy a few sets if they were there to be had at that price.

It sounds as though you got a bargain with the tank, at that price you could do whatever you wanted with it as it hasn't really cost you anything. I keep meaning to go to car boot sales and see if I can pick up cheap wrecked tanks, as they can either be used as the basis for scratch builds, or repaired quite cheaply.

The gearbox is easy enough to fix only about $35, for a zinc metal set. A lot of people just run their tank right out of the box and never bother to grease the gears. This is just as destructive if you did that to a car. If they were plastic gears their life is numbered anyway so it's just an upgrade.
For the driving problems can be either the transmitter or receiver. Probably the transmitter as when the rx conks out it goes completely with NO function. I recommend an upgrade to 2.4 get system and treat that transmitter like the delicate thing it is, like eggs.

Well my gearboxes arrived and using the mysterious instructions about black cats and hexes I proceeded to remove the old and on with the new. Suitably reassembled and with battery refitted I tried it and....... IT WORKED!!!!! It zooms around and spins, turn left and right, turret up and down and left and right. Didn't try firing bb as the dog was observing with either interest or horror, couldn't work out which, and I didn't want to spook him. Well I have a working Tiger 1 first tank and all for £35 including postage plus £14 for the gearbox incl postage - amazing (just have a spare RX18 that I didn't need but hey maybe I'll need that for the next tank - don't anyone tell the better half).

One small problem which I feel requires fine tuning. Right tread works perfectly but the left tread is clicking at the rear idler. It seems to be catching on the idler wheel somehow before slipping on. It doesn't seem to be affecting the handling but I would like to fix it. Any suggestions please?

I'm going to look out for a sherman in February that is in need of tlc so if anyone hears of one let me know.
