Been a while since last post with holiday and looking after the mrs after she did her back in.

First up was mod the battery box so can put in big capacity LiPo battery.

Image

Then I cracked on with replacing the turret motor (shameless copying WW :{ ) tried a yellow and black cap motors the yellow is slower than the standard green the black is quicker so went for the black. Now have a full turn in about 13 seconds compared to 21 before so big improvement. (yellow was about 29).

Need to do 360 rotation mod next. But before I do what do I need to do with the cables so they don;t get too tied up? replace with a coiled wire from a telephone unit or just tape the lot together to form one cable?

Cheers mate.

Well been running it this evening. Ran it for 30 minutes with smoker on and didn't even run out of battery use. Before with the HL 2000mAh battery was only getting 20 minutes and that is with smoker turned off. So well worth the work to fit a LiPo battery.

Looks like I found the cause of my loose tracks.

Image

Doesn't show to well but the gearbox shaft no longer sits central but is forward casusing the slackness in the tracks. Now I do have some shaft bearings to add but been holding off as thinking might change gearboxes which woulldn't be possible if I fit the bearings.

And if anyone wants to know the ZTZ has long shaft low profile gearboxes.

Next up was the 360 degree turret mod.

Here's the big gear which is attached the the turret.

Image

As you can see there is a 1cm or so solid plastic to stop the gearbox turning the turret round and round and causing a big knot of the cables.

So basically need to cut the block to give three extra teeth.

Image

And I replaced the gear with a bit of lube between turret and hull lid to try help the turret turning. I also taped all the cables together in the center to try limit the cables getting too tired up.

Image

Quick test and all is working. :D

Right guys did some more work on the beast last night.

Turret turning was better but still not that fast after my last motor swap. So got myself some of these high RPM motors

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300648764340? ... 1423.l2649

Problem is their are only rated at 3v and 1A so wasn’t certain suitable. So when I got them I connected two in series with a battery so each motor got 3.6v and OMG how slow is my battery flat. O well nothing ventured nothing gained connected one directly to battery, that’s better smelt a bit but motor handled double the voltage ok. Next put it in the turret turn gearbox connect to battery and see how quick the turret turned. 9-10 seconds for full 360 rotation so better than before. (still smelling a bit)

Finally can the RX18 supply 1A current to the motor. Yes it can did 3 full turns in each direction so about 1 minute continuous use and fine.

Only concern is how long the motor will last but only time will tell.

Thinking might put other motor in the elevation unit and see if that gets quick also.

Done some more work today.

Got myself a set of black metal (normal ratio) gearboxes.

Image

Problem is the long shaft boxes don't come in low profile version. So the gearbox on the left needed the side plate switching to a low profile one so the motor sits lower, all the gears rejigging and the gear on the drive shaft flipping round and sitting at other end. :problem:

Next job fit some shaft bearings.

Image

Enlarged hole in the hull side wall and push in.

Image

Tracks back on and no more sag in the tracks.

Image

Took it for a spin and a lot quieter. :D

Also fitted one of those super fast motors to the elevation unit. Wow now super fast possibly unrealistic now but the thing is so noisey :-< maybe it get better with use :shifty:

I try get a video of the turret rotation and the elevation in action.

Also my smoker appears to stop working :'(

Great work Tankbear, love what you're doing I'm going to do the same thing to mine as it's way to slow for a modern tank, top job
