1/16 Elefant Ludwig/Asiatam
Re: 1/16 Elefant Ludwig/Asiatam
Thanks Sassgrunt! I just ordered some 1/72 x 1/2 inch flat top machine screws for mounting the hull pieces to angle brace like you suggest. and I have some 1/2 x 3/4 angle somewhere.. I too was looking for tubing to cover the 'split' I also have to work out the friction between the wheel mounting and outer hull...
the joy of modelling..

Re: 1/16 Elefant Ludwig/Asiatam
After an hour or so of careful filing..coarse, medium, smooth then emory paper..and repeat...and repeat..until I got the contour I'm happy with for the L71 gun of the Elefant. I takes almost the whole length of the King Tiger tamiya barrel to be accurate.
Now it looks like the one piece unit..

Beautiful workmanship, xrad. It will be something to envy when it's finished.

Good job Xrad, I have to say very good job with the barrel. Watching this build with interest. Saxondog
Re: 1/16 Elefant Ludwig/Asiatam
thanks Sax! would have been much easier with a lathe..
Re: 1/16 Elefant Ludwig/Asiatam
This I well know as our gun system barrels had to be made, but first the tooling was not available for the line bore. It had to of been a very tedious process for you. Great work, especially considering the patients required.

1/16 Elefant is really good.xrad wrote:started with the barrel:
1/16 king tiger tamiya two part barrel converting into 88mm L71 one piece with some light machining. Of course, i don;t have a nice lathe so luckily, the barrel fits into my drill press chuck. I ground down the thicker stuff on a grinder, then stuck it into the drill press. with gently pressure and a bar file, aluminum comes off easily. Don;t press hard since only one end supported. Don;t get it hot or alu does not file well.
smoothing with coarse emory cloth..then fine cloth.
You use a drill to two part barrel converting into 88mm L71 one piece , just great!
