That's the way to do it, Dogberry. I've used my local Benson Auto Parts here in Ontario to mix up spray cans of paint both from scanning a car panel and from using the recipe from the manufacturer. They were both acceptably close for bits not adjacent to the originals, which is what I needed for engine bay finishing.
Alternatively, if you can find a home decor paint shop with a sense of humour like I did, they fiddled with the mix of an existing colour chip close to dunkelgelb to mix me up a little bottle of paint for my son's Tiger's wheels. No way was I buying a THIRD bottle of expensive Tamiya stuff! It's long dried up but with filtering and proper thinning it could be airbrushed.
