Interesting, thanks for the information!
I have an old old Tamiya KT I want to get up and running again at some point but I had no intention of using the DMD with it.
Seems like you’d be better served by getting an aftermarket MFU, but then you’re tacking on an extra $100-$300 on top of an already expensive model.
See here is my situation exactly. I'd prefer to use what the kit came with "DMD MF-01" and add the TX/RX and run it for a bit till I decide to do an aftermarket board which I know will happen But I'd prefer at least to experience the whole thing bone stock before I go spending Easily another $300 for a board.
I'm still not 100% sold on the TX16S, I also like the Boxer and have been reading up and watching loads of videos comparing TX's. I just want something that I don't have to monkey with to get working. There's a reason I love the TK7.1. I know theres a whole undiscovered world out there but for this brand new build I want to Keep It Simple Stupid. At least at first
Curious question, does the DMD have any value in the aftermarket? Brand new? Or Used?

I have really come to appreciate the TX16S. Besides having 16 channels (I need all of those channels) I am always discovering new ways to do stuff. Customs curves, logical switches, global variables, etc. It can seem daunting at first, but I appreciate having the ability to do some of this stuff. Momentary switch for all of my guns, creating a virtual 9 position switch for sounds & smoke, being able to set different speed settings with a 3 position switch, I really enjoy it. But… I’ve had it for about two years now, and I’m just now discovering new things that you can do with it, so there is a lot to learn.
I’m not sure what the boxer has vs the TX16S though, so maybe that fits your situation better. I imagine that if you mostly do older tanks you might not need so many channels. But with modern tanks you’ve got remote weapon systems, turret stabilization, remote controlled optics, etc. I’ve also got two channels devoted just to FPV. So maybe the TX16S is overkill depending on what kind of tanks you run.
I also picked the TX16s with the built in ELRS, but unless you are doing FPV and driving out of line of sight, you probably won’t need that either. I can only go about a 1/4 of a mile before I lose visual, so maybe even the range offered by ELRS is overkill compared to other protocols.
My only previous radios were the HL, Torro, and FlySky i6x, so I’m not super up on whatever other options are out there, but I don’t regret getting the TX16S

Yes, they are still worth a pretty penny new or used in the secondary market. I would say they are less valuable to those not in a battle club. I think they have been less desirable in recent years because the Heng Long boards have gotten better. I'm not a big fan of the DMD system, but I think I will run them in the Tamiya tanks I have just so I have some tanks I can battle with any club regardless of their rules. All of them pretty much accept Tamiya for battles. I find that the low speed control isn't great using the Tamiya DMD. I believe the new Centurion/Sheridan DMD T-11C is supposed to be better than older ones. It runs $202 US from Tamiya USA.

So you're running ELRS with a Tamiya DMD board?
The Boxer has a lot of the same features in a smaller more ergonomic package and a loss of the bigger screen.

No no, I only run ElMod, OpenPanzer, and occasionally a Taigen V3, I don’t have any DMDs. From what I have seen though, I don’t see any reason whey you couldn’t do an ELRS TX/RX with a DMD.
I like the screen size on the TX16S for when I’m trying to view the outputs of all the channels for when I’m testing out certain things, but it wouldn’t be make or break for me.
