Before mounting the suspension on the chassis I decided to make the chassis shape conform to the proper Chieftain hull profile. The Chieftain has a 'boat-shaped' hull, and so I added an extra layer to the chassis floor and front to create the correct profile. This also has the advantage of strengthening the whole chassis.
You can see the hull profile from the 1/35 model hull
Started by adding a support down the centre of the chassis underside
Then added one side
Then the other side
Then the back
Then the front
Job done
The whole hull is now much more rigid

And we have suspension
Meanwhile the printer is churning away printing the 24 wheels, 12 spacers, 24 suspension arms, 12 spindles, 12 wheel caps......
Lots of fun

A Chieftain is a beauty. I am curious to see the finished tank.

Thanks for the good words, I think next week is very very unlikely. This is the easy bit but I'll keep plugging away.

You've done it again, Alwyn. Spectacular work on the design of the hull and running gear, I'm excited to see how you approach the near-organic shape of the turret.

I'm very lucky to have got an stl for the turret from biertje who has somehow managed to download 3d images fom world of tanks (I'm afraid I'm not bright enough to understand how he did it but he did post an explanation), so thanks to his help then that's one build I won't have to do, just print it.

The tyre was printed with TPU filament.

Hi Alwyn,
I ordered a spool of TPU last night, uncharted territory, it’s the future

Have you been using the latest Beta version of Cura? I’ve tested it on a few bits that I know print well & it’s under extruding massively, yet when I print one of my older gcodes it prints like a good un!
Cheers
