My wife's real name in Russian is Yeleana Yevgenyevna, which is Helen in English. Lean'chka is the "familiar" or family name, it means "little Helen". We also call her VCO, which stands for Vertically Challenged One. She is only 5' tall, quite the small girl. Yevgenyevna is her middle name, it is the feminine version of her father's name, Yevgenyi, or Eugene. Here they do not use a middle name like we do, your middle name is the masculine or feminine of your father's first name. So, she is "Helen, daughter of Eugene" in English. Even your last name has a gender. Your brother's last name will be slightly different from your last name, because he is a boy and you are a girl. Lean'chka's last name is Skorova, while her brother's last name is Skorov.
We live in Krimea, a peninsula on the south part of Ukraine on the Black Sea. Krimea was given to Ukraine to administer by Krushchev, the Russian leader at the time, many years ago, but for over 200 years it was part of Russia. Our city, Sevastopol, is on the south west part of the peninsula. The Russian Black Sea Flot, or Fleet, is based here, and our city considers itself Russian, not Ukrainian.
The Greeks founded many of the cities around the Black Sea 2500 years ago. Sevastopol was first called Hersoness. The old city was destroyed 800 years ago in a war, and many people left the peninsula. They are now excavating the old city to see what is there. Sevastopol for many years was a "closed city" because of the Russian Navy here. You had to have permission to come here unless you lived here. Now you can come and go as you want.
When you get away from the big cities and towns, the small villages in the far countryside are poor. Some do not have water or electric service. Many are farm villages. The ground here is very good in the flat areas, and crops grow very well. Farming is very important in Krimea, and in summer and fall we have delicious local fruits and vegetables, fresh from the farm.
The cities and large towns look almost European, and in fact we are a part of Europe. We have shops and stores like you do, and many open air markets too. The people are usually friendly, but not many speak English. I am American, and have lived here for 3 years now. Lean'chka did not want to move to USA, so I came here to live with her. I do not speak much Russian, and what I know is mostly Soldiers Russian, which is a little different from Cultured Russian. Lean'chka speaks very good English, and she also of course speaks Russian, and she knows Ukrianian, which is a little different from Russian. The government in Kiev wants us to speak Ukrianian, but we refuse, and speak Russian.
Sevastopol also has a lot of tourists in summer. Our weather is very good, and may people from Russia, EU, and England come here. The beaches are very nice, and the Sea is clean and warm. We have no sharks in the Black Sea. The water can get very deep very fast. If you swim out 50m from the beach in some places, you will be in 200m of water. There is no tide in the Black Sea either, so the water stays the same level always.
I must go now, Katyushya. I have a lot of work to do today on our gardens, and we must go to the city centre also.
