Did the JS-3 get manufactured in time to see action ?

I can't help thinking that the cast metal turret looks like a cowpat :haha:
Thanks Paul. From my research they are reported to have been involved in the fighting against the Japanese at the tail end of the war that cannot be confirmed.

I'd tend to say no based on the fact that the tank was in its infancy and had many issues that needed to be adressed to make it reliable and operational.

Yes it has a very patty like shaped turret Image

Here's an interesting first hand account by a German tank crewman in 1945. Rudolf Salvermorser. It was originally in this website...

http://www.feldgrau.com

He was a gunner here's his crew and tank attached below...

"Before the battle that nearly took my life, we were informed of a new Russian tank, the Josef Stalin III, that weighed forty-six tons and fired 122 mm projectiles. Because of its thick (120 mm), sloping armor, our 75 mm rounds would simply bounce off its skin unless we hit it from the side at a very close range. When I fired at the T-34 in the valley, I wasn't aware that there were a number of those monsters waiting two kilometers away at the edge of the forest. No sooner had I pulled the trigger than the Russian behemoth began firing. For once, the Russians struck our tank with their first round. The projectile hit our vehicle between the barrel and the barrel sleeve of our cannon. It tore our cannon off where it struck and, incredibly, entered the exposed chamber where it detonated, causing our loaded round to detonate as well. This tremendous explosion caused our waiting rounds, though not the magazine, to instantly explode as well."

Is it possible.... ImageImage

Mick I was thinking the same thing... Quite an interesting fellow if you read the whole article. Was born in the United States and moved to Germany with his family as a child to become a very decorated soldier.

He did start the story by saying "the day I almost died" Image

Good afternoon,
Sounds like this lucky fellow may have been thinking about the IS-2 which was around in significant numbers at that time in the war. Either way, _very_ lucky!

Painless

Still can't believe that fellow survived that explosion

Though it's these stories I find so interesting while we research these vehicles.

The JS3 was in the Berlin victory day parade 1945 but I doubt fighting the Japanese.
