Your concerns are completely justified: The Hooben T55 is badly engineered, the kit doesn't even have the correct parts list let alone enough correct parts to do any more then a static model, and you'll spend more on the parts to make it R/C then on the model itself and 10 times longer then any other kit to re-engineer it just to make it function as well as an $80 Heng Long tank. That said, the kit is relatively unique and still has that raw Slavik design to it shared by all Soviet armor, and that the kit manages to convey very well. Is it worth the headache and expense? The strongest opinion i have is, the more you spend on doing to it, or having done - the less headache and vice versa. And anybody that invests (it is going to be an investment whether time or money it is you spend more of) in this tank should be aware of all this before sinking what'll probably turn out to be around $600-1000 in the end.
How far have you got on yours?

No idea where you're getting your costs from, mines got all the upgrades, tk60, OKMO T55am2 kit and no where near that. The barrel recoils a bit crap as with the supplied linkage that barrel twists but aside from that no issues. The gearboxes are excellent and with the wheel bearings now supplied everything runs smooth.

A new one is what, £300?

Decent board - up to £200?

Speaker and upgrades can cost another £100.

It can easily spiral but depends on your choice of board.

I first bought the TK22 and even that remote that programs it, somehow - and was already shipped when somebody advised it would be better to get the TK60.

I shipped the whole kit to tanks of Oklahoma city to do the build - except for the paint. I made the decision to out-source this complicated build when I assembled the tracks and pins one at a time (this took me 3 hours). Looking at the kit plus the R/C install forced my hand, I have disk disease, this limits the time i can work on this project, and I knew what would happen if I tore into it with the idea of making it actually function! It was no easy decision, nor cheap either, but I can only work 15 minutes at a time before I must stop and rest. For a model so complex I had to send it out or probably see it left half-finished or missing features. This model is basically a static kit that someone happened to design in R/C function as an afterthought. Looking at every other builder's tank, it became clear there was no way to make it on the cheap. Since nobody who's made one seems to have been able to do it, without re-engineering the entire tank.

It has gearboxes, it has turret rotation, elevation and recoil. I'm still not understanding what you mean by having to re engineer is for rc. If you buy the artr kit (opposed to the static) everything you need aside from led flash, speaker and control board.
