Yes all photos should be backed up, preferably in two different locations. As an IT'er for 43 years, I know that the standard definition of a backup from users is that it's going to be done tomorrow or they meant to do it yesterday but ......  :/

I use a separate network drive and back up everything thats changed at least every 2 days so the most I can lose is 2 days work. By using 'cloud' storage you are making yourself hostage to the supplier, and you have no idea how safe their security and backup arrangements are, so my advice - back it up yourself and save it somewhere before publishing it.

The funniest (but tragic for the user concerned) experience of backup I ever had was back in the days of floppy disks, when I installed some accounting software for a client and carefully trained the operator in doing a backup. Of course in the early days everything fitted on one floppy disk, but when volumes expanded and backup needed more than one floppy, she simply inserted the same disk over and over and said Y to the prompt 'Do you want to overwrite this? When the power failed one day and corrupted the files and I went to do a restore, then the sad truth became apparent, and all the files had to be recreated from scratch  :/ :haha:

So please make sure you have backups

Hi Herman, you don't need a hard drive, just buy a USB memory stick of the appropriate size, say 64 gigabytes, go into file explorer on your computer, select the directory where your pics are stored (eg My Pics), highlight the subdirectory, select copy from the explorer functions. Then plug your memory stick into the usb port and your computer will ask what you want to use to access it so select explorer, select the paste function, and windows will copy all your pics to the memory stick. When complete select the eject option for the memory stick and there you have your backup. Remove the memory stick and put in a safe place (remembering where you put it - I often suffer from senior moments when putting things in safe places and forgetting where I put the Bl**dy thing).

Then when you want to back up again, place the memory stick back in the usb slot, repeat the above procedure and windows will ask if you want to duplicate existing files, simply select no and again you will have an updated backup.

Simples!

I haven't lost any photos because of photobucket's latest scam, they're all still on my PC and being so IT stupid I back them up on CDs. I only do that in case the PC goes kerblewie, and then I'll still have all my precious tank photos! I only ever used photobucket to host images to post here, and that's why 99% of the photos I've posted here are now blocked. There's no way I'm going to take the time to re-post all those photos after they've been moved to a different host, so I guess it is what it is, and those photos are now lost to future users.

Fortunately, most of the stuff I do is on video and that's unaffected.

I have to say I've tried google photos and imgur and both are a pain in the ass to embed photos with :/

Shame we can up the photo size limits for the native uploaded on this site.

Hi I would say that if Photobucket get away with charging , the rest will follow, so you have to keep this in mind , I would say best bet if you want to keep forums running is to use the storage provided with the forum, this may mean size restrictions to the file you download, But at least the photos will be there when people look at post.
I have never had a photobucket account , I down load my photos to which ever forum in the size needed for that forum.

Pete, you'll have to teach me how to re-size photos. ;D

Mick, it ain't that PB wants a fee, it's that they offered free service (paid for by ads, which made things difficult but hey, it was free) and then they block everyone's stuff with no warning and want $400 to unblock the photos. Ive heard you can get a full on website for about 25% of that amount and host your own stuff, but I haven't a clue how one would go about it. There's a difference between making a fair profit and rippin' folks off, can ya dig it? 8)

Almost every photo I ever posted here is now blocked, but fortunately most of my stuff is in video format and that's all on youtube. I've heard a lot of people say they're going to delete all their stuff at PB but I'm just going to leave it there. It can sit and take up space and if they ever get smart and get rid of the block maybe it will come back. I'll figger out another way to post photos here, and until then I'll just do videos. Or maybe make the still photos into one of these

phpBB [video]

Would seeing stills that way be better than not seeing them at all? I don't necessarily have to add the music or pan effect, so for builds I could just have them flick from one to the next, and if you wanted to study something you could just pause the video, eh? I'd miss the zoom feature, though. Some of the details these guys do are well worth a look under magnification.

Hi I use photo gallery(in widows 10 system) open with it click edit and you should see re-size , set it to keep ratio set at 640 and jobs done . you can post them on here .

I was just rambling about minimal charges, like what would possibly be needed for making this forum more large photo friendly with the possibility of direct posting bigger pictures and that the overall forum costs would be higher, because pictures take up a very large amount of storage space, and there are lots of people that moan, I've met them in various clubs, I wasn't being rc tank specific because I haven't been to any yet and haven't met any of you guys.

Mick.
I get it, Mick, and I agree. If we could have a much better forum for a small fee, like 5 or ten bucks a month or so, I'd be all for it. I'll tell ya what, they have a donate button, I'll pop five bucks if you will. I guess for you that would be just under 4 quid? I get a lot out of this forum, I think it's fair to chip in. Maybe we as members could set a regular "I dare ya to kick in five bucks" drive? Wanna start one now? Wait a minute, while I put my money where my mouth is.

OK, I'm back, did ya miss me? I just went back to the main menu and clicked on donate and did the paypal thing for five bucks. The charged me a fee of $.03 so I paid $5.03 US and the forum will get 3.73 in British Pounds (Sterling?).

As Brad Pitt said in my very favorite part of the movie "Troy", "Is there no one else? IS THERE NO ONE ELSE?"

This is my thread so it's OK to hijack it like this. Post right here if you threw a couple beans into the kitty. I dare ya. We get enough guys posted right here and maybe we can do some good for ourselves. I'm sure the powers that be will take notice. And if they are watching, if you set my rank permanently at Sargent I'll throw in another ten. I never did like Officers. @) :/ :haha: 8)
