Best of luck to you Sparten. Don't think anything is worse then back problems that are misdiagnosed or mistreated.
I went through something similar with my back although it was in the L4 and 5 area. Went thru 3 "Specialists" before I found one who actually know what was happening and fixed it. Unfortunately the nerve damage the 1st one caused by not removing some bone chips he made and then missed removing that had migrated into the nerve branch openings in one of the discs.
Even after they were removed the nerves were not repairable and my feet are still numb and the nerve pain has to be managed with drugs. If I would have found out the mistakes the 1st one made and then continued to ignore earlier I would be living well off the lawsuit I could have brought before time limits for suites ran out .

Just spotted this, Lordy Andy, get well soon mate, I hope they can get your back sorted out. From what you were telling me it sounds like this is going to be a long haul to get anywhere near what you can comfortably live with. Be good to see you again when you are fit and well, and keep us updated on progress.

(Forgebear) Dave they have mentioned a loaded X-ray ,and if nothing shows on the MRI I think they are going to try that, but each morning my leg is more painful and more swollen , The pain between the base of my spine my right knee along the sciatic nerve is excruciating.
