Heng Long has two holes in which to insert the spring end. The softest ride hole is what the tanks springs are in when you get it. You could try to drill more holes to get a softer ride but you will have to keep some tension on the spring.
I used enough lead bullets to equal the weight of about 5 or 6 NiCad batteries put in containers that fit along the sides and the front of the battery box ( had to move the speaker forward a bit ). Now when I run over obstacles the suspension compresses to its limits instead of the tank rising up.
