Thanks Brian
Certainly looking forward to seeing the progress on your SU85. I'll try and get to the club this Thursday and bring the Panther.

Cheers

Hi folks, I've done a bit more work on my Panther (only a bit this time Richard!).

Managed to get the turret more or less functional with a tamiya recoil unit, gun elevation unit and a Heng Long turret ring fitted. I didn't have the metal mounts for the Tamiya recoil so I need to fabricate them with sheet steel pop-rivetted together.

Sawed of the mantlet 'chin' with a razor saw and filled and reshaped it with milliput.

Applied milliput zimmeritt to the mantlet and used 'Crispy's' plasticard and hot iron method for the rest of the turret.

Scratch built a muzzle brake from plastic tubing but I'm not too happy with it. Might get one from Stellamodels or Impact.

Cut out the turret rear hatch and made it functional.

Hope you like it so far.

Cheers

Hi Chris,

As usual top notch work. That zim ( both types ) is excellent.

A little. Heck yours looks like a Panther A. And a mighty fine one at that.

My Panther D looks like it was scuttled. Pieces every where. Waiting for parts on one area so I started on another. Than started another so on and so on. Part though are trickling in from TankZone and WeHoCo. So I should soon be on track.

Thanks chaps but I've realised to my horror that the side armour angles are wrong. Correct for a 'G' (which my build started out as) but not for an 'A' - curses!

I stared at the model for ages, consulting reference books, measuring drawings and ran various solutions through my head.

1. I could just leave it and hope no-one notices - but I would be reminded of the error every time I looked at it! So no go.
2. I could leave the hull sides and increase the slope with some extra plasticard and bodge with milliput - hmmm - probably look worse than it does now!
3. Pull it all apart and replace the offending parts - shudder!
4. Stop building and start on another project hoping that if I leave it long enough it will fix itself!

It's a no-brainer really. Decision number 3 was obviously the only choice.

So I pulled the top hull apart and rebuilt it with new sides and top deck. (I had to replace the top deck because the old one was too tatty after being pulled apart).

So here's the pics of the re-build.

So I'm not as far ahead Richard. A case of two steps forward and three steps back! I'd be interested to know what you decided to do with the hull sides on your Panther 'D'.

'Just' need to re-zim the sides now and reposition the rear stowage boxes and I'll be back where I was at the beginning of last week - scratch building is so much fun...

Cheers

It's because of you that every time I look at my PzIV Im reminded that it has a Pz III Rommelkist!
Fortunately I've been able to convince myself that the original got blew off in combat and the only replacement in the repair depot was for a Pz III.  ;) ;D ;D

It's a shame you couldn't do the same thing with your hull sides Chris, but it looks like you've done a cracking job on the replacements. Great work, keep it coming.

Cheers

Sorry to hear that, but you made a great recovery. That was the first thing I did. I told myself if I can get the right slopes I will continue. And after several hours of cutting, piecing and gluing. Walla success. Here a before and after pic of the front.

I noticed from one of your earlier pics Richard that you had filled and sanded the front hull corners. I vaguely wondered at the time why you had done that - duhhh!  :/

Great work Richard. Can't wait to see what you've done next on your 'D' (after the parts arrive that is - Tankzone are not noted for their fast turnaround!)

Never mind, I'm nearly back on track again and - like all these things - I find I do things better the second time around! At least the turret fits better than it did before.

I don't think you need to think up any excuses about the Panzer III Rommelkist John. I've seen several pictures of Panzer IVs (and Tigers) with them on. So I think you're well in the clear with that one.

Cheers

A bit more done on the Panther 'A'
Re-zimmed the new sides and airbrushed a basecoat of Tamiya dunkelgelb (XF60) overall.
Created tastefully located chipped zimmeritt patches here and there.
Re-mounted the tool holders on the hull sides.

Here's the pics:-

Just about finished now I reckon.
Still need to do a few cosmetic additions and build in the IR combat system into the cupola.
The running gear needs to be 'mucked up' a bit but I'm sure a couple of hours driving in the back garden will accomplish that!

Hope you like it so far.
