I'm not entirely sure I'll need more power. Running on a 2S lipo the thing is way too fast as it is. The advantage in a different motor might come in if you're towing a trailer, but for just a 4x4 truck I think the stock motor with the 2S should do for me.

Its might need a combo of a new motor and lower gears in the transfer case.

What I have noticed is my truck is quite fast but I ordered the higher torque motor because I've noticed that the truck has very limited pulling or climbing power when it comes to obstacles etc. Straight and flat it's quite quick. Incline or ruts and bumps and it struggles a bit.

I'm running a 1200mah 2s lipo battery so its much better but the stock motor is well, weak IMHO. I wish I could gear it to be much slower and more importantly - powerful.

I also noticed a distinct lack of power when I hooked up that 3 lb trailer. On flat level concrete it's fine but I doubt it would be able to handle any kind of hill. So, like you say, Carl, we need to get more torque. Or, at least that's what we need if you're going to pull a trailer. For just a little truck by itself the LiPo battery seems to give it enough power.

I also saw that HobbyKing is having another flash sale on the small LiPO batteries. They also have an interesting-looking little charger for just $11 but I haven't investigated enough to see if it's any good. For me, the smart charger does everything but for a guy that has trucks and wants a cheap charger for these small batteries it might be pretty good. Especially for $11. Oh yeah, The Flash sale on batteries is 350 milliamp hours for $2.56

This evening I took the truck apart again to install my new Tamiya Torque tuned motor for the truck. Luckily the canvas cover I attempted is removable so it makes things like this easier.

For anyone looking to do this it's a very easy and straight forward install.

The only thing I advise is take your time and pull the pinion gear straight off very slowly and carefully and it's a straight swap into the truck transmission.

The throttle is much more responsive and the driveshafts and wheels move much freely without any clunkiness I noticed with the stock motor.

I must say it's absolutely more powerful and torque is present. The truck pulls very strong and I can't sit with the esc revving up like before ( in my videos) without the truck trying to move! Much more power in tap for sure. The motor cost me $8.00 US in eBay with the shipping.

Carl, this is excellent information. For those of us that want to modify a couple of these into tow vehicles this is exactly the stuff we need to know. I'm really hoping you'll take it to the next step and get some side by side comparisons for towing power. One great way to do that is to just hook up the truck with the new motor to an old shoe or something and see how well it drags it across the floor, with the other shoe attached to a completely stock truck right next to it. Does that make any sense? That's why I like to use shoes, they come in pairs so it makes a good comparison. Also, you can easily increase the weight of your shoe ("tow sled") by just throwing some nuts or bolts in it, since that makes it easy to add the same weight to each shoe. I like to use rolls of pennies. I have lots of them and they make great dead weight. They're also easy to break down into smaller weight if you need to.

You said they have more torque, how well do you think these motors will do in a tow vehicle?

Anyway, keep up the great work and I hope you'll keep testing the limits.
