No need to apologise. I had the same thoughts myself, but just did not say so.

Took a bit of tracking down, but there is a latch below the doors. On most WW2 pics the left door is open, and the right closed, or they are both open. Haven't seen one with the left closed and the right open. (All viewed from the rear).

The latch is shown as vertical and horizontal.
The right door has a vertical rod that drops into the hull. This is operated from the inside.

So, my guess is that the left door opens using the external latch, and the right one using the internal latch.

I've got an idea for a catch. It may not be historically accurate, but it should work, provided I can cut a small thin slot in the rear plate.

Thanks for the offer. Let me have a good look in the cold light of day and properly think through what I have in mind. I might well take you up on the offer.

On the other hand, there is this

There is something just left of centre which looks like it could be the latch. It must definitely be there for a reason.

How about this....if the pic is a mirror image (as many are on the web) it would put that handle in the right place.

Final submission, lol. Take a look at this thread, there is info there, plus a pretty clear pic of the mysterious handle.
