More like the size of a black bear. Seems pretty hard to get animals that look correct 1/16th scale except maybe for horses. Been looking for years at what the local Farm and Fleet store puts out to try to find some milk cows that could pass for 1/16 and they are always way to small or to large.

The Ertl/Tomy stuff is good for horses and pigs, and I have some cows on the way so we'll know about those soon. There are a few high end names, like Lil Buster, that are the right size and high quality but very pricey. There are also a few things made for G scale trains and if they run as large as the 1/16 stuff they might be just right.

Yes, they do, very high quality but all I've been able find says they're 1/20 scale. But again, you never really know until you try one. I have some "Britain's Ertl" (Big Farm, now maybe Tomy?) on the way and I'm curious to see how they match up to the dragon horses in 1/16. They're horses are very, very good, and I'd say middle of the road price-wise. I'll do some video comparisons soon, as i also have some of the Marvel line to demo. I'd like to get a couple "Lil Buster's" to compare, as well.

Good looking for something you just started on.
Are you going to make a defensive line somewhere to indicate where the Allied forces are expected to attack from.
That would make what looks to be a pretty large area a nice line of demarcation between the opposing forces with a place to have the Germans have artillery emplacements camouflaged or even some bunkers and machine gun nests.
Maybe a small stream with some bridges across it with only one large enough to handle the biggest tanks and a few that would handle smaller narrower tanks and even some foot traffic only ones. Also an area of the stream that any tank could try to cross by going down and up an embankment.
You can tell I wish I had the outdoor area you have to build such a layout as I'm full of ideas of what I would do with it.
AM looking forward to seeing this build progress.

Do you remember Mad Max when he was Beyond Thunderdome? Remember when they snatched the little dude and broke out of Bartertown in that train/truck contraption? And Max climbed up to the drivers door and said to the guy, "So what's the plan?" and the dude replied, "Plan? There ain't no plan!"

We're pretty much flyin' by the seat of the ol' pants here, so I haven't really thought about dividing it into a battlefield. This site will never make a good IR battlefield so that changes things. I do have an area set aside for the allied encampment, though. I think I need to build more buildings. :)

I'm not thinking of it as an IR battlefield, more of as a large diorama to drive tanks in rather then one in which everything is static. Personally don't care about IR battles as there are no clubs anywhere near here except for car racing ones.

I do have the Dvd of that MAD MAX movie and remember that scene.

I agree enough buildings to have at least a typical small European small town with all the buildings crammed together on either side of a road or at a crossroad would make they layout much more interesting and test the tank drivers ability to drive and turn in a relelativly tight space .
I would thing a 3x3 ft space would be enough to build up such a scene in.
When I was stationed in Germany and roamed around the Graf training area there was a old town that was abandoned probably in the 30's and all that was left of it that were recognizable were some building front brick or stonework walls. A church was most prominent as was the remains of the old cobblestones that the town once had, no sidewalks or curbs. In all there were only about 10 building remains that could be seen thru the overgrown grasses and trees. It was located where what used to be a country road had a t shape and coming in from one side you drove down a small hill.
Such a place would be perfect for a large diorama section only with the buildings intact or only slightly damaged and still in use. Wish I would have taken still pictures of the stuff over there but I took mostly films of military areas and equipment in action all of which disappeared from my belongings when I shipped them back to the states (probably official cold war censoring).

Good afternoon,
Thanks to Jack of Jackalope fame for the excellent parcel of Post which arrived today. Same here vis a vis thinking regarding the war torn little village I am envisioning. It can be used as a German site or Allied or 'versus'. Vehicles will be parked for pictures or driven for fun. It's not a battlefield especially since there is only me to use it. I might talk the Mate into driving around a tank so more than one vehicle at a time is in motion.
regards,
Painless
