But first of all, Hermann, why do you say the DMD does not work? I never heard about any DMD unit failing so far (but MFU yes)
If I remember correctly with my king tiger DMD, to start running I had first to fully throttle back and forth, and then I was able to drive.

Well, being that I am completely retarded when it comes to electronics, the guy that knows these things told me so.........and I have no reason nor smarts to question it...........thats it basically.
Plus the fact its a very old model, and not had any maintenance or care for years.
Unless there is something these units 'do' to stop them working, its done

Any advice as to if this thing would work as a suitable replacement for the genuine DMD.?

I'd read that they aren't, I cant see a connection to an mfu or outputs for rotation and elevation.

Thanks mate, I read it again and it’s for a T01 unit replacement.
I’m going to have another go at resetting mine just now, even though I was told the reset button is not working.
Worst comes to worst, I will use an IBU in it that I have.
I assume to do so I will need to chop off the TAMIYA plugs and replace them with suitable ones ?

Thats a scam! Ugly, bulky, expensive and nowhere near to what you need. That does not have controllers for turret functions and no connection to the multifunction unit.
I really would go with aftermarket boards.
And regarding your faulty DMD... Maybe you can send it to somebody for testing, resetting, whatever. If you want I could try to fix it, not going to charge anything just the shipping back to you.
EDIT: yep, Tom said the same, lol.
And yes, you need to replace the plugs...

Progress. Followed the system reset process in the manual.
Changed the motor wires around and now I have
- correct forward/reverse & steering as per manual with relevant sounds.
- turret traverse(forgot to check left-left-right-right though!)
- barrel elevation but that works in reverse. I may need to change the polarity on the wires to the new motor. down is up etc.
- machine gun fire sound.
- I cannot get the fire or recoil to work on main gun & with that the battle system wont work I assume.
So, at this moment I have a tank that can drive & rotate turret & elevate barrel, fires it MG & will look ok, but without the main gun & battle unit working I have a Heng Long
