The depot I worked in was built right on the oceans edge and when the tide went out you could walk close to a mile out on a corral reef. The local used to go out on it and catch colorful tropical fish that were stranded in the tidal pools to sell to aquarium fish providers.
I went out there several times just out of curiosity and saw plenty of those spikey sea urchins. Was very careful not to step on them. Also saw my first octopus close up. I was looking into one of the tidal pools and saw what looked like a kind of shapeless clear glob of something. Took my walking stick and touched it and it changed colors so I could see it's octopus shape and a big cloud of black as it shot across to the other side of the pool in about a 1/2 second.
Not may GI's used the public beaches on the south end where all the US military bases were, but up on the islands north end there were some spectacular ones hidden from sight of the little road that ran there by high coral towers.
We had a little earthquake there shortly before I rotated back to the states that really made a mess of the roads on the north end of the island. I remember that because it happened at night and I wake up in kind of a stupor hearing this weird sound, looking up and seeing the huge concrete beam over me bed and thinking that" hey this is an earthquake and if it fell I would be squashed", then falling back to sleep. The next day some us took my car to see how much damage it caused and didn't really see any until we were way north and the roads had sections that had risen or fell up to about 7 feet and we had to turn around and go back toward Naha.

Yeah...I wouldn't mind going back there one day... maybe spend a year...just absorbing everything...that country is so rich in history there is a story or legend that goes with every territory...the topping to the whole deal is the beautiful landscapes

Cant comment on the mozzies, but the M1 V2 looks bloody brilliant.
I would go yes vote for the green as the turret sits.
Sorry, Im still catching up after 3 weeks away.
I was almost going to get a Leo and an M1 but the level of intricate detail that is required to even get a base line would do me in
Got to hand it to you 3 guys for the Abrams builds going on right now, sure is a synopsis in research & info for all to follow
From the comments it seems that H/L has cracked the code with the Abrams yeah ?

Thanks Herman...but really if you want to see some unreal M1 builds ..you have to take a look at the other 2 for inspiration ...Giant's and ATC's

viewtopic.php?f=22&t=17727
Both these Gentlemen have gone above and beyond detailing theirs...and contributed so much in the creation of mine...all I did was take enough info to make a GUP version :haha:

What has made this build extra fun is that there really isn't any aftermarket detail parts...so every aspect has been scratch built ...adds just that little touch more satisfaction when the project is done :D

ALPHA it was a beautiful island. One thing I always regretted was not going out to try to find the location of a B29 crash landing wreck that was supposed to be largely intact with the jungle taking it over. We were told the jungle areas were still full of stuff from WW2 rusting away and to avoid going to look for any of it due to unexploded munitions. Kind of like the Ardennes areas in Europe that are still full of stuff left over from as far back as WW1 and still off limits for tourists.
If I went back to Okinawa now I would like to see what was done with all the property we stripped the buildings off of and returned to the local government. I know the civilian military family housing was being demolished when I left( pissing off the locals who thought they ere going to get free houses) I think the depot I worked in was slated for the same thing.

Added note....Not sure HL has cracked the Abrams nut...but what they have produced is a pretty well thought out model...as Giant says in his build...it does have flaws...I'd agree....but with that said....Even with it's flaws...for what you get in the package...it's a really good deal...money well spent IMO ;)

Yeah ...it would be great ....even looking for that B29...there is so much History there...you could spend years just exploring and it wouldn't be enough...the people are pretty cool to deal with too...Dang you Giant....as I right this...I think about the many onsens they have...what I wouldn't give to be soaking in one of those right now ;)

The 1st pic is a SEPv1 as used by US forces.

The second is a SEPv2 with the Protective shields for the commander and loader and what looked like a slightly different configuration of 50 cal mount and a back shield for the commander if he has the copula hatch in the open hatch overhead protection position and the A2 v1 air handling units base is installed on the bustle but the unit itself not mounted. Maybe an export version with mods specified by the buyer. Or some manufacturer proposed new add on for the current A2v1 used by foreign Abrams users. Can't read the language on the picture but the dates seem to put it back at least 5 years.

The 3rd is a model, probably in 1/35 scale, of one of the types of tusk systems installed on the Abrams. doesn't show enough to tell the tanks version bit my guess would be its M1A2 because it more or less has the hatches for the A2 APU location(but is missing the intake and exhaust for the APU of the A2v1) Unless that's what the A2v2's top left rear deck looks like now.

The second pic is an M1A1SA as seen in the back. SA means Situational Awareness. You can read more of that here. Note that it does not have the CITV, and that is the Commander's Weapons Station as found on the M1A1, not the Improved Commander's Weapons Station as found on the M1A2. The M1A2 has a CITV in front of the loader's position, and has the ICWS with simplified, unstabilized pintle mount for the M2 machinegun. Since the second pic is that of an M1A1, there is no UAAPU.
