I think it was literally 1 Tiger got shipped back from Tunisia and a few Panzer IIIs and these tanks were handed over to depots. The Tigers that never made it to Africa in the first place I don't think were even shipped to depots in Italy for transportation. I could be wrong but nothing I've read would suggest otherwise. I would stongly doubt any Tiger in 505, by the winter of 1943 would be grey. While none of the images are in colour, most of them show they have camouflage patterns, which fitting in with everything that is known about 505 would mean yellow and red/brown schemes.

As for the Tropical scheme being repainted? Possibly but I really doubt it would be grey, at that stage the order was to paint everything with dunkelgelb.

The juices are flowing.
All the info Ive seen on the early 505 Tigers does point to an all over Gelb with or without hard edged rotbraun patches, but the '44 ones with the 'E cupolas and some of the dustbin cupolas were all patched over Gelb.

I found this decal site which has a very broad cross section of military hardware, and although to small for us to buy and us, makes for interesting referrence.

http://henk.fox3000.com/bisondecals.htm

My issue now is to abandon the grey going by the date in theatre & run with a plain dunkelgelb with the WW over the top. The subject picture still screams grey..................
Summer pics of the unit after Kursk show plain gelb with occasional patches of Rot, but the 'E' models definitely came in with a more formal covering & pattern.
The grey will have to wait.

I'm probably the wrong person to give an opinion on the paint... my gutt says go with gelb... gray and white smanterings over that ...I do see your dilemma though Herman... the Tank does scream gray...especially on the Eastern front where cold and snow where the rule... The timing might be incorrect for gray.. but I really think it depended on the crew... if they wanted to be seen or more stealthy ... I would think even hiding in the forests and such would call for white grey ..even black as gelb would make it stick out like a sore thumb...especially to aerial observation or attack ;)

Good luck with this one BudImage

As long as my ass points south she will not see THIS little offering from Mr Alpha !!!

Ya got me there mate, the Ostketten I bought in recently..................I admit to one set being for a StuG.
Ive found a subject picture & will begin it once the 'Mighty-Whitey" is done.
Your pictured StuG can pass as a repaired vehicle(primer & Gelb) with a winterised barrel !!
