With ir battleing, new people should get heavy (class)tanks because they allow 9 hits before death. Metal in ir battleing is just extra weight to slow you down and wear down any plastic it comes in contact with. For tamiya ir system battles the best out of the box are the tamiya panther closely followed by tamiya m26. The panther is faster but it is almost impossable to through a track on the m26. If you fight on grass, fwd is better because grass gets sucked into the drive wheels on rwd. I fight with a m26 and the trick in grass is to drive backwards a lot.
If you want to fight in a heng long, you will need to get some kind of battle system to make them work with the tamiya's( they are the standard), a lot of these will be as much as the tank. With the hl tanks, you need to remember that these are toy grade tanks. Only get the smoke and sound tanks as they have better speed control. You spend much time fighting in them and the gear boxes will die and the motors are not much to talk about. All of my hl's have upgraded gearboxes, motors, batteris and speakers. the soundsystem in the hl is just not that good...they sound like chitty-chitty-bang bang. There options with some of the battle systems to upgrade sound cards.....all of my tank have this also.
The hl tanks I rcommend are the panther g( do not get the panther know as the pantiger), king tiger and kv1...all of these are offered in both bb and ir so make sure you know what you are getting .....
in that case i am into the heavy class of tanks. but i am not in any clubs. i do not think theres any thing like that in ely. it would be great if there was

There are people in our club that drive 200 miles to our meets.....then there are the Danville battles in south va, they are 500-600miles away and many people in our club show up to those meets several times a your .
On the heavy class tanks, I am not saying the middle and light classes are not fightable. The really good guys can clear a battle field using their speed and shorter reload times, I was just saying that beginers tend to have more fun with the heavies because one mistake does "cost so much". With all tamiya bassed systems, power is reduced to the motors as you receive hits to show battle damage. A light or medium class tank loose the speed advantage very quickly once hit.

Family first, of that there is no argument.....that does not mean you can not hook up with a tank club through the internet that is kinda close. There are a bunch of different rc tank forums out there that might have people on it that are close to you, so look around. Have you ever seen that baseball movie "Field of Dreams"?......Keven Cosner hears a voice in his head that says "if build it, he will come".....thats what I tell the club members that have to drive a good ways to the battles.....you build a battle field and I will come to you. I am not saying thats what you should do I am just saying that many times people get the words "can't " and "won't" confused. I am also not saying that rc ir batteling is the only way you can enjoy your tank, thats not true ether. I just find its more fun to play with other people than playing with myself...wait, that didn't come out right.....you know what I mean. My advice is to do lots of reading, do some searches on youtube and watch how the tanks work.....i have only been in this hobby for a year so take that into account. I do sugest if you can aford the cost, get a tamiya, they are very well designed and the sound is great.
