Probably too late now. But I bought some short leads with crocodile clips on each end for when working/testing stuff on the tank electrics.

i.e. smoker unplug from RX18 board clip leads on the small printed circuit board then onto the battery plug.

As long as you unplug the relevant thing from the RX18 board it will stop current going to it and damaging it.

Sorry to bring back this thread from the inky blackness of oblivion, but I have a busted RX18 board. Would the Resistor on the right hand side be usable for a heating element for a smoker?

I've run an OMHS calculation on the banding and it 10ohms. Possibility or not?

Banding is brown, black, black, gold for those who are ocularly challanged :wtf:

Hi Se7en,

Don't worry about dragging up old post.

To be honest I dont know if it will work. The standard element is 15ohms which works out about 0.5Amps going to 10ohms is more than 0.7Amps or about 40 - 50% increase so unless Heng Long built that tolarance in, I would suggest not risking it, specially if you getting a new rx18!

However, you dont need the smoker connected to the rx18 for it to work. If your ok with a bit of rewire then yes use the 10ohm resistor it will makes loads of smoke. Basically pick up a supply from the battery after the on/off switch, wire through smoke switch then to smoker.

If you need any more info just ask and I try upload a diagram or something.

Ian

Thanks for the reply tank bear

I do indeed plan to run the smoker on a separate power output. Im still deciding what voltage though. I would like to get a secondary NIMH battery and power my extras from that, as I have a few things planned for my tank. Anyway, I digress, the rx18 board was a faulty board I had installed I now have a new one. I'm going to try it and post my findings here.

Guys,I have the super smokers, but I also was involved with the designer as he tested different resistors, ceramic wire wound type work best,I will not guess on the resistance value because the H/L Units are just to weak over all, http://rctankwars.com/ Sells the super smoker device.

Also Normond, srtmnd54 has done alot with the H/L units to improve their performance.Searching his post may provide additional information.

Totally agree, all my smoker knowledge is down to him. Rebuilt my smokers to his spec and are a million times better.

I think single power is better as otherwise your aux circuits could die mid use of tank running.

As for voltage I run a few tanks on 9.6v batteries as find gives everything extra power. If running low ratio gearboxes the increase power helps give some speed back.

Plus my 15ohm smoker runs brilliant at 9.6v that why I said a 10ohm would be great at regular voltage.

The best smoker i had found was..A tin of lighter fluid.. Now that realy did have a nice smoke effect to it ;)

So would it be reasonable to run 10ohms at 9v as you have 15ohms @9.6? or is the voltage to high?
