Sorry that I did not make it more apparent in my first reply....The Lubrication that I mentioned only applies to METAL gearboxes !
Alb.
Even on metal gearboxes it's best to a silicone or synthetic lubricant because the lubricant will still leak inside the tank. As the gearboxes are fixed onto plastic posts you don't want to risk getting oil on as they'll soon break.

I have a Panzer III. I recently upgraded to the steel gearbox after the left white metal gearbox started jamming (after 2 days of indoor use).
I have noticed a little bit of play (up, down and side to side) on the axle in both of the left gearbox's. The right gearbox's have little to no play on the axle.
Is this normal?
Could this cause damage to the gears?

Hi Tankrookie,

As long as the gears are meshing (if that's right word ??? ) ok you should be ok. With the HL gearboxes the axles sit in metal bushes so a little play is normal.

Or could be the gearbox has come loose and the play is the whole gearbox moving? I have this with one of my 3:1 gearboxes as I've took out and put in that many times the screws no longer bite into the plastic fixings.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, they seem to be meshing. I've played with the metal box and the gear on the axle is warped which seems to be causing that to jam.
The new steel gears however seem to be nice and straight!

The steel gears should be fine, you probably just had a bad set of plastic ones which stripped.

Ive added an extra gear to the standard plastic gearboxes and had my tank going up a 60 degree slope this afternoon so even them are strong. I will upload a picture later to show how steep.

It's the white metal ones that came with my panzer.
I think my next job is to have some obstacles lined up! :haha:

That's with plastic gears (extra gear added to make low ratio) standard HL motors and metal tracks, drive & idler wheel. Plus old rubber back of car mat for extra traction. ;)

Hey guys,

I was going to start a new thread related to my issue, but thought I would just post in a similar thread.

I have a new Tamiya Tiger that I am building and I bought some upgrades to install out of the box, Schumo Reduction gears, DT Hull Brace. I like to make sure that the strength is there from the start. I am not going to be beating up on this thing, but just like doing the upgrades....like you, I am diseased. :haha:

Ok, so I didn't run the gearboxes in, apart from some light running on D-Cells before installing the reductions. I know there is a combination of plastic and brass in the Tammy gearboxes, so was not sure what running in procedure to follow. THe Schumo's required some 'work' to get them to fit, as the mountings did not allow the pinions (any of the three supplied with the Schumo kit) to mesh. I had to 'lengthen' the adjustment holes for the motor mounting in order to get them to mesh. I left them with a bit of backlash as normal gearing applications.

Now, when I run the tank it seems so NOISY....I have no previous tank experience, but this seems excessive....I am probably going to remove tracks and drive sprockets to see if the reduce the noise (the one sprocket seems to rub on one of the suspension arms on the first wheel 'bogey'. Once I am down to just bare shafts on the drive side, I will check the mesh on the reductions.
Failing all of that, is there a procedure for running these things in? I have not put much lube on because I intend to run this in soft sand (I know, I know, ..bad idea) but I am sealing it up as much as possible. I had thought some 'dry lube' like for bicycles, or graphite, but I am not sure....certainly don't want tons of grease in there.
This tank will be sparingly used and is just a 'piece' I have always wanted.

Are the gearboxes always this noisy? I haven't attached the speaker yet, so not sure how much it will drown out the drive noise...videos on youtube don't always tell the real story on the sound side of things.

Thanks in advance.

I use motorcycle chain lube in my gearboxes.

Mine are the same, I put those Schumo reductions in my tiger and for the first few hours they sounded terrible. They still make a fair bit of noise but have quietened down now.

I have been trying out some silicon grease on mine but it makes no difference to the noise......

Its worth it though as without them the things as fast as a leopard 2 :lolno:
You can never have too many tanks...... :D
